Ours is a bit used, but perfectly ok and it seems crazy to just throw it out?

Jzee · 18/03/2007 15:55

Sorry to be so ignorant, but what's freecycle?

OP posts:
nappyaddict · 18/03/2007 16:00

freecycle

its a place where people give away stuff they no longer need for free. its purpose is to reduce the amount of rubbish going into landfills and the like.

nappyaddict · 18/03/2007 16:01

or if you no someone who needs one give it to them. advertise it in your baby group or school.

nappyaddict · 18/03/2007 16:02

i know you aren't meant to use second hand car seats but if the person knows you then i think its ok to use a second hand car seat. when ds was born our car seat hadn't arrived and we borrowed one off my cousin for 4 weeks.

mummydoit · 18/03/2007 16:26

Can I just mention that it's not a good idea to use a carseat that's more than six years old (six years from date of manufacture). The plastic ages and could fail in a crash. If you're giving one away, make sure you tell the recipient how old it is so they know if it's safe to pass on again when they've finished with it.

End of public service announcement

fortyplus · 18/03/2007 16:30

I gave mine to a friend for her parents to use when they were minding her child - saved them all having to swap round every time they looked after him.

I think most people would want a new one to use themselves, but she was happy for her parents to use my old one and - most importantly - she knew it hadn't been involved in a crash.

nappyaddict · 18/03/2007 16:36

mummydoit can i just ask where you got that information from as i'd never heard that before.

nappyaddict · 18/03/2007 16:39

doesn't matter i've just googled it and you're right. although it said 6-10 years but potaytoe potartoe....

mummydoit · 18/03/2007 17:12

Nappyaddict, I got the information from an American friend of mine on another forum. They're much stricter in the States about carseat use, for example babies have to stay rear-facing until they are one year old as well as reaching a weight requirement. This friend is a 'certified child passenger safety technician' so presumably knows her stuff. Apparently, ten years is the absolute maximum age permitted by law in the States but six years is recommended.

nappyaddict · 18/03/2007 17:36

ah right. yes i was told 12 months and 29lbs til they should go forward facing. this is why we bought a combination car seat instead of an infant carrier.

nappyaddict · 18/03/2007 17:38

sorry meant to say they say 20lbs is the minimum but nearly all of their car seats go up to 29lbs.

PestoMonster · 18/03/2007 17:39

We took ours to the dump and replaced with brand new all-singing, all-dancing booster seats
