Eco laundry liquid

I've decided I want to be a bit more eco friendly when it comes to using household products. I've recently purchased ecover laundry liquid but to me it smells like fish!! I'm going to have to chuck it as it is making me gag. Can anyone recommend any other eco laundry liquids or powders. Thanks!!

Which ecover did you buy?
I have the bio concentrated ecover which is not fishy.
Laundry smells of nothing.
I switched from Ariel actilift after they changed the formula and the smell was overpowering.

Have you heard of splosh? I haven't tried it yet, but will once my current stock is gone.

Ah,ha, my area of expertise!
Hello folks! My first post here. I'm a complete eco cleaning nut. Infact, I'm a bit of an ethical shopping nut. But cleaning is my speciality and I have a blog that I add to on Facebook for testing out/reviewing various products. I originally set the blog up so I could report on my findings as I was making the switch from convential cleaning products to eco alternatives, but everything is now an eco alternative so I regularly post my findings on different products.

Anyway, back in topic, I've tested LOTS of eco detergents. I used to only ever use Persil Bio powder as I found it was the only detergent that got things clean everytime and didn't stink to high heaven. It was actually the last product to go when I made the switch. I've used Ecover, Ecozone, BioD, Sonnett's, Method, Splosh, EcoEggs, Faith In Nature and ECOS.

My favourites so far are the Ecover Biological liquid for darks and Splosh Cotton Flower powder for light colours, whites, bedding and towels.

The Ecover contains no optical brighteners or bleaching agents, but it is biological, which makes it great for washing dark colours.

The Splosh is also biological and contains bleaching agents for keeping light colours and whites looking bright, and also for hygiene on sheets and towels.

Both have a light, fresh scent.

The myth about biological detergents being bad for your skin is just that - a myth.

The Splosh takes a bit of getting used to. It comes in a self-dosing bottle so you tip it up and it dispensers the right amount of powder each time. Splosh have taken all the pointless bulking agents out of their detergents, so you only need a very small amount. It looks so strange at first to use such a tiny amount, but believe me, it works! The whole concept of Splosh is pretty great. Basically, you buy a set of bottles and then order refill pouches. The refil pouches can be returend to splosh free of charge for reuse/recycling, so it's completely zero waste.

I have a discount code for Splosh, so feel free to use it should you want to make an order. It's 1B5BC0.

There's a video that gives you some info about the company and how the refills work:

If you don't want to bother with 2 detergents, I would recommend the Splosh as it will make a far better overall detergent AND it's cheaper - £4.95 with free delivery for the refill bag.

My blog is here, if anyone wants to have a nosey: www.facebook.com/ecocleaningblog/

So useful! Thanks Eco, great info.

I switch between Method, Ecos and Splosh. Splosh my favourite softener, Ecos my favourite liquid.

Always buy bio powder. Not only is it the most effective at cleaning, the cardboard packaging is much better than plastic packaging that liquids come in always. Ecover is kind of false marketing imo.

I love the idea of eco & more environmentally friendly detergents but I'm not entirely convinced they clean as well. I've used a few over the years that didn't clean as well as Persil or Ariel powder, but that was a fair few years ago

milkmoustache · 02/06/2017 08:41

I love the idea of Recover so when DD was in washable nappies we used that. Sadly the nappies never smelt very clean, they got really stiff, and when the drains had to be unblocked, there were great slimy lumps of ecover clogging everything up.

PocketNiffler · 02/06/2017 09:06

@milkmoustache - this is a well known problem with ecover liquids and cloth nappies - the nappy lady recommends against them.

RedBugMug · 02/06/2017 09:10

ecover bio powder is great.
nice smell and stuff gets clean.
I can only get it in specialist shops or online though which is a pita.

Vinorosso74 · 02/06/2017 20:03

I don't like Ecover either. The Simply range is eco friendly and vegan too.

JaneLinderman · 12/04/2018 08:38

I was looking for something similar when I came across this conversation a few weeks ago. I found a brand called Wilton London. They're eco friendly and their scent is really nice, doesn't smell sickly at all. I find with most eco brands that the scent doesn't last when my laundry is dry, but this stuff does. More expensive than ecover but it's a way nicer product, and you get a lot of washes out of the bottle. It's in a shop near me but you can get it online too. Wiltonlondon.co.uk - I've seen it on Amazon too

Just an update on this thread. Since my earlier post, Ecover and Method have been bought out by SC Johnson and started using synthetic perfumes in their products so I have since ditched both.

I now use Ecozone liquid (the green bottle) which is made in the UK, cruelty free, vegan and allergy UK approved. It’s fantastic stuff, highly recommended
