Rinse with cold water over the half sink. Anything less is minging.

comeagainforbigfudge · 30/05/2017 10:10

This was a recent conversation in our house.

OH - can you rinse the dishes as you wash as there's too many soap bubbles?
Me - no, this is how I wash the dishes. You are welcome to take over if you want?
OH goes silent and walks away to do something else.

I use a basin and he uses running water. He's never commented about tasting soap off of ANY dishes regardless of who washed them last. Grin

Sit cutlery / crockery in hot water with bubbles , rinse with hot water

CroakingCrocus · 30/05/2017 10:15

Rinse with hot water and air dry.

This is one of those things where foreigners (like me) are generally aghast at the relatively common British practice of not rinsing.

My DH didn't use to rinse but I quickly brought him over to my way of doing things.

Do you wash your hands and not rinse them? And step out of the shower with the gel & conditioner still on? Yes, I guess you do. Eeewwww.

Teardropexplodes · 30/05/2017 10:21

I'm hit and miss. Sometimes, if I'm feeling domesticated, I chuck a kettle of boiling water over them.
Other times I leave them and am still alive

rocketman3 · 30/05/2017 10:22

the soap not being rinsed off is one of the most traumatic thoughts i could possibly think i need to leave this vile thread now

ittooshallpass · 30/05/2017 10:27

Always rinse everything.

MissWilmottsGhost · 30/05/2017 10:33

I think some people use too much soap.

Before dishwasher, I rinsed food off the plates before washing them in mild, environmentally friendly liquid. Then dry with a teatowel.

I love having a dishwasher. It rinses, as all dishwashers do. But I still notice the tablet scent far more than I used to notice the washing up liquid residue.

MaisyPops · 30/05/2017 10:35

Just wash and put on the drainer. No rinsing.

Actually, I do rinse pans and things with loads of foam on them but if it's a few soapy bits then no.
I'm the sort of person who turns a tap off when brushing my teeth etc so rinsing seems wasteful to me (not a judgey comment. Personal preference before someone jumps).

fruityb · 30/05/2017 10:35

I never rinse, ever. Never have. My draining board is cleaned regularly and I air dry.

Rinsing? Ain't no one got time for that shit!

PenelopeFlintstone · 30/05/2017 10:36

I didn't used to but I do now. And now I don't like idea of not doing it.

fruityb · 30/05/2017 10:37

In fact I'm actually surprised it appears the minority don't rinse lol.

MaisyPops · 30/05/2017 10:42

Same fruity I always thought it was normal.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 30/05/2017 10:56

I wash up under running water and rinse as I go. Non-rinsers are animals.

MusicToMyEars800 · 30/05/2017 11:07

I rinse every time, I wish I owned a dishwasher Sad

ArgyMargy · 30/05/2017 11:28

fruityb · 30/05/2017 11:40

I do do those things yes @argymargy but I've never put them on the same scale. Conditioner all over my hair is not the same as a small amount of bubbles left on my plates.

I wash up several times a day - I cannot be arsed rinsing every item! I've made it to 35 and rarely get ill so it must be ok.

My mum never rinsed either!

fruityb · 30/05/2017 11:40

I meant I do rinse my hair and hands lol

putdownyourphone · 30/05/2017 11:47

It's not just minging - you're eating and drinking soap residue, and unless you use a non toxic washing up liquid you're choosing to leave a nasty irritant on your cutlery and dishes. Why not just rinse it off?

PenelopeFlintstone · 30/05/2017 12:56

It's not the bubbles I'm rinsing off (in my mind); it's bits of old food.

Notso · 30/05/2017 13:07

Exactly, it's old food, dirty water and detergent.

fruityb · 30/05/2017 14:26

Do people take a shower after a bath? This is how it seems to me lol.

Maybe I'll rethink having read this. It's never done me any harm - it's not something I've ever done as I've never seen anyone do it.

banivani · 30/05/2017 14:29

Of course I rinse. In Sweden everyone rinses. My Irish relations did not, except when I washed up, haha. Not rinsing feels a bit scummy and unclean, even if you're towel-drying and thus wiping of most of the residue. I don't think it's harmful, mind. Just feels less clean. We have a dishwasher now but spent many years without so I've washed my fair share.

Two sinks. A decent kitchen should always have two sinks, preferably full size ones, but a one-and-a-half will have to do if that's all that's offered. One sink? Poor planning IMO.

You fill the sink furthest from the dish drainer (as Ikea calls them) with warm soapy water. Pro tip: wearing gloves not only protects hands but also enables hotter water. Wash one item at a time, place in other sink (nearer the dish drainer). When you have a good few items in there you take a break and rinse them off with running cold water and place them on the drying rack. You can be quite sparing with water this way. At home ec in school we were taught to fill the sink with water and rinse that way to save water, but I prefer running water, it feels cleaner and is easier. Keep going until all dishes done. :)
