Please help me to get a strong musty smell out of some clothes

We have recently moved house and the loft in the new house is only part boarded so a lot of the boxes from the old loft have had to find a new home. There are about 10 boxes of baby clothes which we have kept from when dd was a baby in case we're lucky enough to have a second child. These boxes are in the second bedroom and it turns out that they smell really, really musty. They're in the end fitted wardrobe in a row of three double wardrobes. dd's clothes in the wardrobe at the other end are starting to smell because the musty smell is leaking through.

Does anyone have any idea of what I could use to get rid of the smell?

I googled and read that white vinegar was the answer. After buying 6 bottles from sainsburys and putting about 300ml on the clothes before a normal wash they still have a faint yucky musty smell. Have washed one load three times and it's still there Sad

I'd rather not use really harsh chemicals or anything with a strong odour as they're baby clothes which will hopefully be worn by a new born so want them to smell neutral.

I have used nonbiological powder in the wash, do you think bio would be better?

Any suggestions really appreciated, we can't afford to buy a whole new baby wardrobe!

bio powder, hot a wash as they will take without shrinking (60 ideally) and peg them out on the line for some sunshine and wind

Few drops of tea tree oil in with the wash, miracle stuff!

I would vote here also for a hot wash and sunshine bleaching session

I'd go for bio and wash as hot as possible.
If you were to use them for a new baby you'd probably re-wash them anyway!

On the line to get rained and darked on for a day or two.

Thank you all so much for your replies Grin

Today shall be full of bio washing and line drying/airing. Thankfully it's quite a nice day here so I should be able to have clothes outside for the whole day.

mineof, I will be washing baby clothes again if baby number 2 comes along Wink I put that in my original post thinking that some people may suggest things to cover the smell or Zaflora and suggest which fragrance to choose, I know how loved Zaflora is on this board Grin
