Anyone got a Miele Washing Machine?

After performing well for 20 years ours has now died. So this weekend's mission is a trip to John Lewis to get a new Miele washing machine for next week, before supplies of clean underwear run out.

Obviously technology has moved on a lot - I am wondering whether to get the cheapest available Miele (which is not cheap), or pay more for features like auto-dosing etc (exorbitant).

Long term investment, want to get it right. Would love to hear other Mumsnetters opinions/experiences.

Thanks

We got the cheapest Miele we could & it's fab! Not a fan of the dosing systems, you can only use Miele's own brand liquid in it. I prefer powder and adjust the amount for different loads.

Rikalaily · 20/05/2017 11:28

You can use other brands of liquid but you need the refillable containers, then reprogram the dosage in the menu. Tbh, I don't use the autodos that often so if you think you won't bother with it just get a cheaper one Smile

Does the autodose only work with liquid detergents then? I'm not a fan of liquids, so maybe I don't need that.
Old machine the detergent drawer had become very mildewy & skanky though, so it would be good to avoid that if possible.

we have a more expensive one because dh wanted stainless steel
it has no dosing thingy.

it washed fab, large drum, no fancy buttons.

GrumpyOldBag · 20/05/2017 12:31

yes, my DH is very over-invested in this decision considering I could count on the fingers of one hand the number of times he has actually used the washing machine. He thinks extra features = extra cost = must be better.

Got new mid range Mielie. Auto:dos. You can use any liquid in the The refill containers so not tied to Mielie. It's ok, think it's all a bit "emperors new clothes" : not sure what all the fuss is about and good Bosch seems to be as good. Annoying thing with my Mieile is the quick wash only spins it at 1200. The machine can spin at 1600, but not on quick wash programme which is a right royal PIA. You can join WHICH for a pound and access their reviews. Be aware that the John Lewis people do not know everything e.g. They told me I can only use Mielie own brand in the auto dos and they had no idea different condensers have massively different efficiency re humidity build up: which is a HUGE factor in many houses. I had done loads of research before I went and was a bit 😲 as I had assumed they were the font of all knowledge....a bit shocked to find out they were fallible: lovely and helpful and I always shop there but they do not necessarily know everything.

GrumpyOldBag · 20/05/2017 12:45

Yes have looked at Which but most of the Mieles they have reviewed are not stocked at JL which is a PIA.

you can probably not go wrong with a 'cheap' miele.
it will still be solidly built, reliable and (very important imo) repairable)

Thanks for the advice all.

Decided the auto dose was an unnecessary extra faff & bought the 2nd cheapest model they had. Glad we went to look though as the control panels vary a lot on different models, and this one seemed far simpler than many of the others. Delivery a week today.

Now need to count the underpants to see if we can get through a week without an emergency trip to the launderette.

I got one, WKH132WPS with twindos. Costs a fortune. I had problems with it from the beginning. It is said it automatically adds proper amount of washing liquids depending of load. But there is no informatiin in the manual what is proper amount. In my case it overdoses which makes a lot of foam. And clothes smells a lot of this washing liquid (phase 1 and 2). I called service. The guy foud out there is no load sensor. Later service told me this model does not have it at all. How it can dose accurately then I can't imagine. I was using their liquids which were included (phase 1 and 2).
Even if the drum is empty it take 50 percent from maximum dose which is for 9kg of clothes. For example if dose in settings is 60ml It takes 30 if I load 1kg of clothes, even if the drum is empty it takes 30. I set dose to 14ml, it took 12. How I detected it? Just weight containers before and after the washing with kitchen weights.
Logic of this machine is unpredictible.
You just can't wash properly low amount of clothes with this twindos. But there is program for 20minutes for low amount of clothes, also program shirts are for 1-2kg max...
And I don't know how it dose with large amounts as it can't measure your load properly.
Srvice is still discovering is it by design or not... But most probably it isIl...will see.

Good points: it is very heavy, does not vibrate much, pretty quiet. You can use your own liquids in twindos, a lot of combinations. You van use one, or two containers. Put there liquids for color ans white separately, or universal and some conditioner and set dosing with 1ml precision for each container. But as I said - it can be useless as dosing system works unclear.
You also can adjust how much water to use during rinsing and main program if you press +water.

I would not recommend buying Miele with twindos.

Have a basic model, purchased around 7 years ago. Would not buy a Miele (anything) again. Gone wrong a few times in last year. Miele themselves I found to be very expensive and inaccessible (starting with a 20 minute wait for them to answer phone). Eventually used an independent repair company (although difficult to find somebody willing to tackle a Miele).
