Dishwasher- Do you pre-rinse?

User246810 · 10/05/2017 19:34

So, for years I've just scraped food off and shoved in, (stuck pans get a pre-soak as mine are non-stick).

But my mum, who's nailed this housekeeping lark, rinses under the tap before putting in the dishwasher.

We have a Bosch dishwasher and I'd always though it was a bit rubbish but now I think I should have pre-rinsing.

So, is my dishwasher shit or do I need to pre-rinse?

THEY SAY NOT TO PRE RINSE??? ok this is turning my world on its very axis. My faither trained me well in the dark art of dishwashers, but it was back in the late 70s so things may have changed somewhat.

AuntieStella · 16/05/2017 10:13

I just get rid of major debris.

And I soften what's in any bowls that have contained weetabix. Even a Miele doesn't get rid of that when it's dried on!

echt · 16/05/2017 10:21

I scrape off the big stuff and am religious about rice, whose grains get stuck in the spinner-arm-thingies.

AtlantaGinandTonic · 16/05/2017 10:29

I remove all the food but I don't pre-rinse. I can't be bothered because as far as I'm concerned, the dishwasher should be able to handle that.

Really Shock! My Hotpoint does.

mando12345 · 16/05/2017 12:55

The rep from neff said rinsing not needed or beneficial.
Mine doesn't even have a rinse button but it's bloody amazing gets everything clean, even three-day in the dishwasher stuff which definitely hasn't been rinsed!

ilovesprouts · 16/05/2017 15:01

Another dish washer newbie here.I'm just about to move in to my new property and it's got a dishwasher, do I just put the tablet in or do I need to add anything ??

dementedpixie · 16/05/2017 15:02

I would use dishwasher salt and rinse aid too

Eatingcheeseontoast · 16/05/2017 15:07

We've got a Hotpoint that must be over 15 years old. it's an absolute work horse and gets everything clean. I scrape.

I'll presoack stuff like crumble dishes.

ilovesprouts · 19/05/2017 15:12

so just a dishwasher tablet won't do ??

Lweji · 19/05/2017 15:16

I use tablets with everything on it, so I don't use salt or anything else. The machine works well.

dementedpixie · 19/05/2017 15:17

Even if the tablet has salt included it doesn't activate the dishwasher softener so I always add dishwasher salt. I use cheap own brand stuff. I also use rinse aid, again own brand. Use just a tablet if you want but you get a better wash if you use salt and rinse aid too

KimKardashiansArse · 19/05/2017 15:22

God no

lizzyj4 · 19/05/2017 15:28

We don't (house full of adult/teenage offspring) but I'm pretty sure that if I could get them all to scrape and rinse properly, we wouldn't end up with blocked drains quite so often.

Lweji · 19/05/2017 15:34

The ones I use only recommend adding salt in very hard water.

They work fine in my dishwasher.

GrouchyKiwi · 19/05/2017 16:33

Yy, I think adding salt depends on your water. The dishwasher repairman who fixed ours recommended closing the salt drum tight and never ever using it because of the water where we live.

I only rinse weetabix, porridge and tomato-based sauces. DH doesn't do the latter and the baby's bottles are all stained slightly orange. Angry

Wimbledon There's no point in linking to the Daily Mail on MN.

DontCallMeBaby · 19/05/2017 22:04

Scrape, don't rinse - unless it's something that's easier to rinse than scrape, like porridge. Mostly DH that does it, and neither of us has actually read the manual.

That's a TRAGIC waste of a cake above.

TheSnorkMaidenReturns · 19/05/2017 22:32

I have very hard water so add salt and rinse aid.

We scrape everything off into a food bin.

I soak baked on stuff before putting in, and rice things as otherwise there is too much crap to clear out of the waste traps and the spinning things. Agree with other PPs about the irritation of poking rice grains out of tiny holes.

The only thing that the machine can't clean is the scrambled egg pan - it just bakes that on and makes it harder to remove.

Nipplehair · 20/05/2017 08:13

Scrape, rinse under running water, pre rinse the entire load on the rinse programme befor main wash.
Use four in one tablet, salt and rinse aid.
Filters removed and cleaned weekly.
Buy and use a dishwasher cleaner monthly or use washing soda.

womaninatightspot · 20/05/2017 08:25

I do think some things need to be rinsed. Scrambled eggs, mash and milk off glasses. My bosch cleans perfectly and I usecheapie tescovalue tabs

stargirl1701 · 20/05/2017 08:31

No. If you rinse, you are using so much water! Your A rated appliance is going to waste as you are negating how little water it needs to wash a full load. It is environmentally irresponsible to be rinsing all your dishes before putting them in the dishwasher.

pinkieandperkie · 20/05/2017 08:32

No I don't rinse unless it's mashed potato or the scrambled egg pan.

Leo35 · 20/05/2017 09:02

Another non-rinser here. We use a Bosch dishwasher in a hardwater area as well. And I'll I raise you: we only use the quick wash cycle normally (only use the longer wash cycle to keep the machine running well)

We do rinse the cereal bowls in the morning as we run the dishwasher in the evening and weetabix appears to have strong adhesive properties!
