John Lewis bedding - am I getting ripped off?

Am moving next week after splitting with cohabiting boyfriend and sadly (but fairly cause he paid for it), he's keeping the bedding we bought a year ago from John Lewis. I have LOVED this bedding (the duvet is the perfect weight and the covers so lovely) and am hovering over the buy button as we speak! But as finances are a little tighter now - could I find the same elsewhere or should I just go for it as they've been proven to make me happy?

It's this 13.5 tog duvet for £60 (quite reasonable?) with these grey covers, also 60 quid Shock.

Also, am used to having a super king duvet with a kingsize bed, but as the new bed will be just a normal double Sad should I go down to a kingsize duvet?

Hypothetically, I would also buy another set of white covers from TK Max to alternate, it's just these grey ones have been quite the treat!

With a normal double bed, a king size duvet will be fine.

Kiwi32 · 04/05/2017 18:56

I would go down to a king size and you'll save money. I think the duvet price is reasonable and IME the duvet covers are worth the money-they wash and wear so well. Do it do it!

DancingLedge · 04/05/2017 18:57

If you love it, stick with it.

hooliodancer · 04/05/2017 18:58

Have you looked at Soak and Sleep? Their stuff is amazing.

Msqueen33 · 04/05/2017 19:01

If he's not one to notice I'd replace them with something cheaper and take the John Lewis ones 😉

birdspooping · 04/05/2017 19:03

Oooh didn't expect to hear 'do it!' - thanks :). Am going to check out Soak and Sleep now as well!

Also, in your opinions, would a super kingsize look ridiculous on a double? Am thinking that if I buy a place would buy a kingsize bed (rather than the double that comes with the rental), so it might save money in the longterm?

Hahaha MsQueen. Unfortunately one of the first things he said when we split was 'just to let you know, the bedding's mine!'. Don't think I could pull the wool over his eyes with this one.

Right so headed over to Soak and Sleep grey kingsize covers £167, dear god!! So that will be a no-no.

13.5 kingsize duvet £56, very reasonable. But CheapAndOrm, one of the reasons I loved the John Lewis one was because it wasn't crinkly. No offense to people who like crinklyness mind you.

So unless others come on in next half hour or so to advise differently, I think that's the decision made - stick to what I know...thank you all!

I think if you've found the perfect bedding for you then you should stick with them. It took me years to find the perfect combination so now I have I'll be buying the same again when I need to.

Also it sounds like you're going through a tough time so a bit of luxury and comfort will be nice.

Msqueen33 · 04/05/2017 19:24

Go with John Lewis. Their stuff is great. We all deserve a little bit of luxury here and there as long as long as you're not too skint.

VeryPunny · 04/05/2017 19:28

My John Lewis duvet covers and sheets have not lasted well. They replaced a set that was about 15 years old, and after a few years the threads are coming loose, the fabric has gone thin and seams have not held up.

birdspooping · 04/05/2017 19:47

All bought, arriving in a few days. Thanks for all your advice, am now looking forward to snuggling down in my new place (spareroom.com room...aaaagh), but thanks to the bedding, I should feel right at home Smile

VeryPunny - good point - am willing to take the risk, but will heed your words in mind when they start falling apart! Am happy to get just a few years out of them.

Good luck with your new start. Flowers

squiggletea · 05/05/2017 17:03

You will sleep in it every night. It's a small investment for a relatively large pleasure pay back.

tammytheterminator · 05/05/2017 21:49

Do it.

You spend a third of your life in bed and will look at it every day. Much better to have something you love. Can't go wrong with JL IMO.

User99573864 · 05/05/2017 21:52

Buy cheap, but twice. Go for JL.

We bought some bedsheets from Dunelm, they weren't cheap but obviously from a cheap shop, the best quality cotton they did. It's like sleeping with a layer of starched cling film, so I save them to discourage guestsWink

dudsville · 05/05/2017 22:28

Op, wash them and air them well before your move so that when you get in on your first night is a little bit of heaven. Good luck!

birdspooping · 05/05/2017 22:50

Thanks for the extra encouragement. Bed is my favourite place, so it's heartening to hear it IS a good investment, thank you all Flowers
