And making loads of space! Also found some diaries I used to keep years ago, when the DC were really little. Will hopefully find the time to sit down and read them soon.

Just had a quick tea break, now I've got to go and do my drawers and the DS's outgrown stuff. Then I might be able to get my ironing put away!

DS's will be handed down to my Nephews and mine is going to Scope when they do their collection on Friday.

What a satisfying job!

MummyPenguin · 13/03/2007 13:27

It is! Except I've run out of black bags, so will do ds's tomorrow. I've got four big bags just of my stuff!! And loads of hangers for Scope if they want them.

I don't know if it bothers you, but I decided not to donate my clothes to the local charity shop as they actually pulp a lot of the clothes, and sell the pulp on. As the clothes I was donating were almost new (some brand new ) I wanted them to be used not pulped. Instead I passed them onto the Health Visitor, who distributed them between the womens refuge, and local families who were in need of them (I think that might have been the kids clothes)

I never knew that, Laura. That's interesting. Will give it some thought in future. Quite a lot of mine were very wearable, and some new too.

you could freecycle them too.

TrinityRhino · 14/03/2007 09:59

sorry but WHAT?
thats awful and who buys pulp,i'm confused

TrinityRhino · 14/03/2007 10:03

Please tell me what it's all about I'm astounded

Cappuccino · 14/03/2007 10:05

I'm sure they don't do this to nice new stuff

I know from friends who have collected charity bags that some people donate a whole load of holey washed out old crap to charity shops

no-one would want it

MrsBadger · 14/03/2007 10:13

Charity shops pick out the really good stuff and sell it elsewhere eg Ebay, secondhand designer shops
they sell wearable stuff in their shops
they sell holey washed out ragged stuff for 'rag pulp' to papermakers etc - really nice paper is often high % cotton rag.

Kelly1978 · 14/03/2007 10:24

I was in a refuge years ago. The workers used to sift through any donations and take the good stuff for themselves. The rest got locked away in a room, we never got to look through it. We broke in one night, to take some bits for our kids, when the weather was warming up and we needed summer stuff.

Laura032004 · 14/03/2007 10:41

I saw the stuff about pulping on a documentary. Panorama or Tonight with Trevor McDonald I think. It was Oxfam that they focused on if I remember correctly. They were saying they get too much stuff donated, and rather than send it out to areas that need clothes, it is cheaper for them to sell them for pulping, and send the money out to needy areas for them to buy clothes locally. Makes sense I suppose when you think of it like that, but it isn't what I wanted to happen to what I had donated. It was talking about clothes put in the recycling bins that you find in carparks etc, not sure if it applies to stuff taken to shops. Just made me think.

Kelly1978 - that sounds awful. I suppose the 'sorting' happens in charity shops too.

kelly! Bloody hell, I'd have reported them, and you didn't steal the clothes, BTW, they were donated for people like you, not the people who worked thare!

I had a good clear out last month, very satisfying. I just got my pants and bra on then tried on everything and was brutal.

I kept a few pairs of trousers that were only a little bit too tight and put them away. I now know when I go to get something to wear that all the clothes will actually fit. So no timewasting.

I now have space for everything to hang properly too.
