Ideas for stylish wardrobe doors...

When we bought the house it had fitted wardrobes with ghastly pine slatted doors thus , which we kept because they were so useful despite being hideous.

But now we're remodelling the upstairs to give us an extra bedroom. One lot of wardrobes are going altogether, but has anyone got any bright ideas about how to make the remaining doors look better?

They'd be an absolute arse to paint as they're varnished already so would have to be stripped first, not to mention getting a brush into all the little grooves...

put some chipboard over them and paint that! i quite like them as they are but i love the 70s!

pin some nice cloth over the top? how dusty is your house (this would not be good in mine)?

if they are a standard size you might be able to get some flat replacements in wickes and paint them or decoupage.

nail hardboard over top?

Take out the slated bits and replace it with a pretty fabric

what is budget?
how diyish are you?

you could paint them in gold eggshell or something, would prob only need a bit of sanding not full stripping.

Ooh, good idea re replacing slats Paula. And painting would be feasible if it were just the frames that needed doing.
Actually I think translucent perspex panels thus might look quite good - the house is boxy and modern which is one reason the country-pine doors look so bad.

Budget is small but not non-existent, DIY skills are extensive .

That would look lovely

I have some cuboard doors which are basically a pine frame covered from the inside by chicken wire then a fabric layer - so, similar to the other suggestions, but with the layer of wire. Might be a bit countreee though.

B&Q sell thin sheets of fretwork that you could tack in place behind the frame, also thin sheets of tongue and groove effect MDF.

oh yes, get the perspex, my cupboard under stairs has that. its a bugger to cut straight though - ours was v thick though not quite like the ikea job.

no idea where we got it, one of those things that just appears during long term diy along with 12 drills.

MrsB - DD has that Ikea wardrobe in her room, and it works well. Looks good, though it does feel a little bit plasticky - what's actually in the Ikea version is corrugated plastic (like the stuff you put in envelopes to stiffen them). Perspex would be a lot better, and have a higher quality feel, too.

I'm sure DH will track some down fishie

a table saw appeared in our conservatory yesterday (my god, the mess!) so I know how you feel re the drills...
