Freezing milk?

I read an article which said you could freeze milk.

Does anybody do that ?

If so, does the milk taste the same?

Do you leave in fridge to defrost overnight before using it?

Good thread. I used to freeze semi skimmed milk years ago and it worked well but I got out of the habit when I moved closer to shops. I don't remember it lasting any less time than fresh milk.
My ex at the time also used to make up sandwich bags with a couple of sliced rolls with some ham in them and freeze them. He'd take take a bag out before going to work and they would defrost on his desk by lunch.

That's a great tip greycat. So the bread and ham defrosted in time for lunch that is brilliant.

I would be too worried it didn't defrost in token hahahah

It's a good deterrent to eating your sandwiches as soon as you get to work!

Yeah I bet it is ahah

I often freeze milk when I have ended up with too much. It's fine. You just have to empty a bit out since it expands when frozen. Far better than letting excess go off and chucking it out.
When we're going away I always shove any milk and bread in the freezer.

BikeRunSki · 28/04/2017 07:17

I find the 1L bottles crack if you don't take a bit out. The 2 L bottles are fine.

Rumtopf · 28/04/2017 07:36

I always keep a few pints of milk in the freezer as well as a couple of bags of part baked rolls. Occasionally dfil will supply us with tons of cheese so that goes in the freezer too but goes a bit crumbly when defrosted but it's fine on top of things or in sauces and soups. Butter freezes well too. Yoghurt is fine too as I freeze the tubes for dd in he summer then it acts like a little freezer block to keep her sandwiches cold and has thawed by lunchtime without getting hot and horrible.

AlfaMummy · 28/04/2017 08:24

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but milk turns yellow once frozen - returns to white once thawed. Just so you know and don't throw it out thinking it's gone bad!!

moggle · 28/04/2017 12:23

Alfa thanks!! The couple of times I've done it (just with a 1 pt so we have milk for breakfast or tea the next morning after coming home from holiday) it has gone yellow and I haven't used it! Didn't realise it went back to white. Should've known really as I remember breast milk doing it when I was bfing.
I also freeze Frubes for DD as she is way too messy with them at normal temperature and she thinks it's ice cream.

I freeze wedges of lemon and lime after being fed up with tupperware pots of mouldy citrus fruits all over my fridge. Doubles as ice too if you don't have freezer room for that!

This is probably fairly niche but if you make smoothies with spinach in (or any fruit or veg I guess) ... I was fed up of buying a whole bag, using a few handfuls for the 3 work mornings I had them and then finding the bag the following week slimy and gross... I now whizz up the whole bag in the blender with a little water and then freeze them in ice cube or silicon muffin molds, enough for a few weeks. I just have a stick blender that can't really deal with ice so I put them in the blender 'mug' the night before and they defrost in the fridge.

Last freezer tip - when a recipe specifies one or two chillies and you have to buy a bag which usually has 5 or 6 in, I bung the rest straight in the freezer whole. They are much easier to deal with when frozen I find - I cut in half and scrape the seeds out with a spoon and cutting them finely seems much easier when they are hard, plus less potential for painful squirts. Alternatively run under a tap or just hold them in your hand for half a minute and they're perfectly defrosted.

Thank you for the useful comments everybody.

I love the one about frozen yoghurt for kids which by lunchtime has defrosted as is still cold.. I never thought of that and when we were out all day DS yoghurt was warm.

My mum blends a batch of garlic, batch of ginger and batch of chilliest and puts them on a plate in balls. Once frozen she will put it in bags. Prob easier for her to use ice cube trays lol.

I have also frozen veg from supermarket. Last week I peeled and chopped a huge butternut squash. I used a third in the chicken tray bake I did and froze the rest after it was all chopped so it's ready to use.

Yesterday I used a third of the frozen chopped butternut squash in my chicken casserole dumpling. I also had onions already peeled and chopped in the freezer which I used too. I also had chopped a leek from the other day which was kept in fridge so it saved a lot of time when cooking.

AlfaMummy · 28/04/2017 13:05

Moggle, I freeze lemon and lime too, so handy and as you say it goes off so quickly in the fridge. As a PP had said, bags of grated cheese is fab too!

JugglingMum17 · 28/04/2017 13:14

I've frozen slices of lemon before and lime for drinks but when I used them didn't seem to taste much lemon and lime lol maybe I need to cut them thicker

So does the grated cheese taste the same as freshly grated cheese. I never liked having grated cheese in fridge because I preferred it freshly grated.

Eatingcheeseontoast · 28/04/2017 13:14

I think that yogurt keeps really well anyway. Plain yogurt has a long sell by and takes forever to go off. We keep it in the fridge for weeks.

JugglingMum17 · 28/04/2017 13:14

Can you freeze pasta/spaghetti?

Eatingcheeseontoast · 28/04/2017 13:48

I've frozen left over cooked pasta and also bags of fresh pasta from the supermarket.

They are a bit claggy when cooked (I just throw into boiling water for a few seconds) but perfectly passable if you are hungry and need something really quickly!

ElfrideSwancourt · 30/04/2017 21:16

I freeze leftover egg too - both whites and yolks freeze well. Was fed up one day had loads of egg whites and no time to make meringues that day so I froze it. I defrost it on the radiator or overnight in the fridge if I'm organised. I bake a lot and it's so useful for any spare yolks and whites. They cook really well once defrosted.
