Why does the bottom of my shower curtain go brown?

And how can I stop it??

It's always pulled open when anyone finishes in the shower so it can dry yet it still goes brown.

Any ideas?

Thanks

none. same happens to me and it drives me nut. i get a new curtain every 2-3 months.

NorksDrift · 11/03/2007 15:56

Doesn't it whiten up again when you wash it?

JaneAustenAllegro · 11/03/2007 15:58

I think it's a sort of mould that grows on soap scum.

Try showering down the curtain with clean water before you get out.

Have the bathroom window open as much as possible to improve air circulation.

Also stick it in the washing machine once a month, put some white vinegar in the rinse cycle, to prevent growth of the mould.

You say you pull it open, but is it still touching the side of the bath? If you have a circular/bendy shower rail, pull it right around so that the curtain is across the width of the bath whilst it dries and it should solve the problem. I only discovered this quite recently, having gone through a lot of curtains myself.

i think it's limescale, that sticks when it's left wet.

It is still touching the bath so perhaps this is why, my shower rail goes straight across so cannot put it 'across' the bath.

I had no idea you could wash them in the washing machine. I have a lot to learn lol.

Will take it down and wash it!

this always happened in my old house (aka my dads house)

in MY house im VERY funny about the bathrrom being clean and dry...

the window is ALWAYS open (Always open at my dads too tho) and my shower curtain now 9 months olds is still as good as when it was brand new

im convinced its becuase i dry it out thoroughly EVERY day, on the outside rather than the inside of the bath

When I clean the bathroom, I wash the bin out, and then leave the bottom of the shower curtain to sit in the bin in a dilute bleach solution over night. I also wash it every month or so in the washing machine. I've also been known to trim the bottom bit off every so often. Only change the curtain about once a year this way.

maisym · 13/03/2007 08:59

laura - good tip about using the bin

Having worked in a hotel with over 100 bathrooms, the shower curtain will go orange/brown due to body grease it can also get into the grouting on bathroom tiles.

wash the curtain regularly but DON'T use fabric conditioner as it takes the protection of the curtain and makes the problem worse next time.

puppydavies · 13/03/2007 11:25

a soak in bleach always sorts mine out a treat, have had same one for 4 years, looks like new.

ScottishThistle · 13/03/2007 11:28

Can't remember the scientific term but the moisture travels from the top down the shower curtain!

Washing it every few weeks should fight the grime!

chestnutty · 14/03/2007 21:22

Scot, I think you are thinking of capillary action - like in plant stems.
Btw , my shower curtains just grow black mildew.
