Looking for a new big load washing machine - any ideas?

Our old washing machine is kaput - I want to get a new one but one of those ones that takes a really big load - does anyone have one of these they can recommend? They seem to vary from quite expensive to a small fortune so I want to make the right decision.

Thanks!

Jenny

Look at commercial ones - they are less pretty but they really are designed to take a hammering.

I have just bought an 8kg drum Hoover one - thought being able to wash double the amount at once would help reduce my washing pile....unfortunately though that just encourages DH to wear more clothes it seems .

(It is a good washing machine though)

I am willing my washine machine (of 9ys) to breakdown so I can buy a new Bosch one. They look fab and take really big loads & will also last for years - well worth a look.

I have a new Zanussi 8kg - bought it cheap on boots.com for £300 (RRP £450)

Yes I like my LG. We do big loads as there are six of us and four are dirty dogs.

i have just got the LG 7.5kg direct drive washer/dryer it was £599 in comet and i got it for £319 at Co-op electrical - they delivered it in 2 days as well. great.

Thanks, I'm going to have a look on-line now - DD potty training at the mo so can't really handle the wee soaked tea towels used to mop up accidents hanging around for much longer!

my dm has a whirlpool American top loader. It's great when I have a mountain of towels and sheets I go to her house as 1 wash in her machine is the same as 4 in by 7.5kg machine. Only down fall is there size but i would have one any day so cost effective. You do have to have them professional plumbed in but it looks the same as you see in all American programmes. Great as it only cost her £350.00 from Sussex Appliances who see on line have a look.

We have just bought the LG one referred to by Loopymumsy and it is fab.

Jenkeywoo · 08/03/2007 23:50

Just ordered the LG one ! bargain from co-op electricals . Is it weird to be so excited about a new washing machine?!

Had both the LG direct drive which was very quite to operate - useful in an apartment - and the Whirlpool American top loader which had a huge capacity and was very quick to wash. Just beware of friends who arrive carrying quilts which they can't squeeze into their own machines. Loved it but unfortunately it has just broken. Remember American washers don't heat the water so although there is less to go wrong, they do need to be plumbed into your domestic hot water supply!

i've got a bosch maxx. takes 8 kilos. had it 5 years with no probs. well worth the money. will probably break down now!

OrmIrian · 09/03/2007 17:31

I've got the same Nickytwotimes. Brilliant machine. Really reliable. And mine was second hand when I got it 5 years ago.

nickytwotimes · 09/03/2007 17:37

mine should be good for a bit then. just thought of one issue we had with it when installing - was hard to squeeze into gap between work tops. lots of swearing and ripped vinyl!

fizzbuzz · 09/03/2007 18:01

LG are fab

We have a Whirlpool toploader which takes a 10kg wash - and does a wash in 25mins. It is absolutely wonderful - we run a B&B so I have tons of bedding/towels etc to wash every day - the washer takes king size duvets. It doesn't heat water, so has to be hooked up to hot water supply, but this is actually no bad thing because I wash in hot water, but then have the option to rinse in cold.
