Getting rid of ants...help!

Am getting invaded by ants and it's driving me mad...they form various troups round the kitchen and into cupboards. We're emptying the bins every night, keeping things like fruit cuttings out of the bin etc but they still keep coming. Every time I block an entrance up they find another one.

I've got a 3 year old and am pregnant so really want to avoid poisons. Are there any safe repellents anyone can recommend? I'm using talcum powder which does work but can't really spread it over the entire kitchen.

Have read about the plug ins that emit low level waves to repel insects but sounds a bit too good to be true...

Ants hate cinnamon. Won't walk over it. You can use cinnamon powder or essential oil if you have it to try and block off where they're coming in.

But if they're really established you're better off with serious shop bought ant spray/deterrents.

Talcum powder worked for me with a crawling DD & a daft dog. Had it round all the skirting boards & at the places they were getting in. Apparently they won't walk over it. Worked very well.

Yep those are the ones Imperial they're the dogs bollocks. I almost feel sorry for them as they organise their line in and out of them. But if it keeps them from running all over me when I'm sitting watching the telly it's tough noogie.

Thanks everyone. Ants have def stopped today so my latest entrance block is working though I'm assuming they'll be back in force tonight. I'm keeping the bin outside which should help, they're in every cranny of it at the moment despite being washed out etc.

If they're back tomorrow/in general this week then I'll get the bait stations linked to - thanks imperial and gamer.

Agree that talc def works but they keep finding new ways in so it's only effective once I see the new entrance.

Didn't have any luck finding the nest outside today.

I HATE it.

We had no idea where the nests were, when my mum's house had ants. There were no cracks outside - in fact outside we couldn't even see an ant, where in the kitchen the cupboards were full of them. I'd just get a couple of those things (I think they're 2 for about £5) and put them down.

No ants yesterday, the latest entrance block is working at least. Anyway, I've admitted defeat and as of last night have put down the bait station linked to. It's by the front door which is def the area they're coming in. Feel much happier not having the actual poison in the house and hopefully that will be an end to it. Having them rampant in the cupboards was the last straw.

Have your looked outside for a nest? Boiling water on that will help!

Op I used this type of thing from eBay. (Cheaper). They have really worked - the ants were driving me nuts!

We get them coming into our bedroom through the cavity wall filling as well as the kitchen. And then we call in the exterminators and they are gone . The council used to do it for a fee (booked online at midnight when I saw one on the bed). Last time they weren't as effective so we went for a local private company who did a great job and will probably be called out again this year. They sprayed stuff that was non toxic once dry. I kept cat and child away for duration. Peace restored till next time.
