.........what's the best thing to do with them? Neighbours with the same kind of doors have used a matt clear varnish which looks good. To me though the wood looks a bit on the dry side so would wax be better? Any advice/tips welcome. (Boring for a Friday night I know!)

how did you strip them?were they painted white?

northender · 02/03/2007 20:06

They had about 10 coats of paint on (possible exaggeration for dramatic effect!) and they were done by a company who dip them in caustic soda I think

we have same prob with frames, skirtings and spindles, heard about nitris morse(sp) that you can paint on, prob similar, but wondeing how much of a mess/hard work it would involve!

The company we used took all the doors away and delivered them back. It worked out at £15 a door. Just not quite sure what to do now. Next door had a firm in to do theirs and skirtings, spindles etc but it was pricey. Doing it yourself sounds messy and potentially nasty with the stuff you have to use.

i love stripping paint with my blow torch! but i did burn a bit of carpet.

i used clear varnish (satin) and about 4 coats. they're quite hardwearing

StrawberrySnowflakes · 02/03/2007 20:21

hmm, doors sound very resonable, but ours jsut need sanding as already natural, but to 'orangy' varnish..its all the rest that looks like and actually is 60 years of recoats!

Thinks it's spelt Nitromors SS?
My doors are all covered in hardboard waiting for us to have the courage to whip it off Someone on here suggested 'cold dipping' was gentler than 'hot dipping' but may have got that the wrong way round? Supposed to reduce the drying out. A satin vranish would look good i think.

StrawberrySnowflakes · 02/03/2007 20:24

thanks Foxtrot..have you used it or know of anyone using it?..im a cm with my own 3yr old so am unsure??

foxtrot · 02/03/2007 20:27

No, i prefer to sit and daydream about the perfect house whilst flicking through my pile of Period Homes magazines, rather than get on and actualy do something £15 per door sounds reasonable, i think it's a messy old business to do it yourself.
