Yellow stains on toilet seat (sorry)

sergeantmajor · 22/02/2017 10:52

Our last toilet seat developed horrible yellow stains under the seat. Impossible to shift. Just had a lovely new bathroom put in and the brand new toilet seat is getting the same thing. Yes, I have boys who wee everywhere.
(Some one in a bathroom showroom once told me it was due to not leaving the seat up when using Harpic, but that doesn't add up as it is more yellow in some places than others).
How do I get rid of these disgusting yellow stains? Steam cleaning, cream cleaners and magic wedge of foam from Lakeland have all failed. I've never noticed this at anyone else's house, so where am I going wrong?

WD40 is your friend here. No idea how it works but we were given this tip a few years ago, and it works!

icelollycraving · 26/02/2017 19:13

Ooh I love these threads. What do you do with the wd40? Just rub in?

sergeantmajor · 28/02/2017 12:58

Intrigued by WD40!

I am ashamed to say I went back to my 'impossible' staining and had a good go at it with a cream cleaner and scouring pad with great results! Didn't realise the answer would be so simple...

Marking place to read later, we have this issue.

LarrytheCucumber · 28/02/2017 13:22

My loo seat (cheap) said only use gentle detergent, so I use washing up liquid. So far so good.
In the past I have never found anything to get stains off once they have formed.

Sgtmajormummy · 01/03/2017 17:15

Olivo
I used WD40 today and it certainly put a "clean sheen" back on the plastic seat and lid (Duravit). That hopefully means it will be less porous.
The light staining has gone but the unfinished rim isn't as clean as I'd like. More elbow grease needed next time I suppose!

Thanks for the tip.

Oooh. I want before and after pics Grin

rainbowunicorn · 01/03/2017 19:32

I have this problem as well, I have boys. A magic sponge works used wet. Any type will do i usually buy them from a pound shop or similar.

Thank you so much to the person who suggested WD40 for removing yellow stains under the toilet seat! I've had one for ages and it irritates and embarrasses me daily but I've just scrubbed with WD40 and a non scratch scourer and it has gone!!!!!

JintyandtheJs · 30/01/2018 16:48

Second the astonish oven stuff. Tried after tip on here. Worked v well and believe me it was BAD.

Whatabanana · 30/01/2018 16:53

CIF worked for me, after all hope was lost.

FannyWisdom · 30/01/2018 17:02

WD40 sprayed on a cloth and wiped over any plastic keeps it cleaner.
It's really good for the window frames.
In a previous house, main road, the grime built up so fast it would run down in the rain but the odd wipe seemed to repel the muck.
This house it repels the spiders.

BigFatDad1 · 03/03/2018 20:48

Bloody Hell! WD40? Who’d a thought it! Yes it works!!
I’m going to try and descale the kettle with it.

mommybear1 · 11/05/2018 09:57

Magic eraser thank you to the poster for that recommendation Thanks

Runsandreads · 11/05/2018 19:59

I have the same problem - already replaced the seat once, but the yellow stains have come back. It's wasn't a cheap toilet either 😤 Definitely trying these suggestions, thanks everyone!

Olivo · 12/05/2018 18:24

Glad to be of service. Unfortunately DH has lost the top of our WD40, so no cleaning here Angry

Gaynor61 · 15/05/2019 07:58

85g of baking soda mixed with 3 and a half tablespoons ( make sure their tablespoons) mix to paste and apply leave for an hour or so then rinse off and wipe clean

ainselyash10 · 28/02/2021 17:15

Just like vinegar baking soda is another powerful disinfectant. For certain results take one-quarter of baking soda and add 50 ml of warm water. Now smear the solution on the seat and wait for 30 minutes. Use a toilet brush and scrub the stains, washout with water, and wipe with a smooth piece of cloth, you can repeat the process if needed. This technique really worked for me.

Whatsthatspookynoise · 02/03/2021 13:48

When I moved into my house, it had that problem and regular bleach, even overnight did not work. I used the whitening bleach and that seemed to work. It wasn't perfect, but much better.
