When DP and his DS came to live with me, along came with them The Cat !!
I am no animal lover, but DP's boy loves the cat, so its staying.
I am hygiene freak, so imagine my horror when I find the cat digging in one of my plants then pissing in it!
Apart from chucking it out at every opportunity, is there some kind of natural repellent I can use to keep it away from my plants?
DP has suggested lime, but think he could be talking out his nether regions

Orange peel in the pot works they hate citrus.

hoolagirl · 26/02/2007 12:33

Yey, plenty of oranges, better start eating some. Thanks!

Ooh I didn't know that about the orange peel we put tinfoil round the base of our indoor plants (if he pees outside I'm not bothered) orange peel sounds more "natural" I'll try it! Ledodgy you're very knowledgeable!

If the thought of decoratively draping your house plants with citrus fruit peelings doesn't appaeal, perhaps using some drops of essential oil would do the trick?

yaddayah · 26/02/2007 13:25

If youu're feeling evil try black pepper also works (think it makes them sneeze !)

I am a cat lover BTW but our cat had a similar thing with our "toddler" vegetable garden (eughhh).. drastic measures needed to be taken !

sazjaz · 26/02/2007 13:34

get a lurcher that will sort the cat out

hoolagirl · 26/02/2007 21:33

Whats a lurcher?
Essential oils sound good

Get a water spray and every time you see it about to do the do, spray the cat with water. They dont like it and will associate the bad behaviour with getting wet.

hoolagirl · 26/02/2007 23:06

It just tried it again, chased after it like a wailing banshee, think it got the message, will be trying some of the suggestions tommorow.

maybe give it a litter tray?

sazjaz · 01/03/2007 07:02

a lurcher is a hunting dog lol

Trillium · 01/03/2007 07:08

We have two lurchers...... and or cat curls up to sleep with them with them

Trillium · 01/03/2007 07:09

"our" cat, and just one "with them"

'tis very early...

sazjaz · 02/03/2007 22:00

i also have a lurcher and dear hound ,,, they dont like cats at all lol

Tillyboo · 07/03/2007 22:34

Try putting a bowl of food wherever the cat pees or poo's. It'll soon get the message not to use that spot - wherever it messes, follow with a bowl of food in the same location. Hopefully it won't take him long to start going outside.
It's a way of marking territory and a sign of being unsettled and anxious - how long has the cat been living with you ?

I'm assuming it has access to outside or a litter tray ?

exbury · 08/03/2007 00:02

Any ideas for terminally stupid cats? Ours has so far ignored pepper dust, oranges and cloves and the "cat deterrent" crystals... (problem is where she craps outside, not that she goes inside)

Tillyboo · 08/03/2007 10:24

Try the food option outside too - just be careful as you don't want millions of cats thinking they can get a free meal ! Also, you don't want to attract rodents.
A tip for stopping dogs weeing and pooing on your garden, verge etc. is to fill a clear plastic lemonade bottle with water and place it in the area that's used. I know it works for dogs o it's worth trying for cats too.
Good luck ! There is nothing worse than cat poo, it stinks.
