Henry Hoover...why?

Mehfruittea · 27/01/2017 09:52

I have a dyson pet hair hoover and thought it was the best one I could get. I've noticed my cleaner has a Henry that she brings with her. I only ever see Henry being used for work purposes, in the office, at the gym, car valeters in supermarket car park etc.

So do professional cleaners choose Henry because he is actually the best? What's your experience?

I run a commercial cleaning business & we use a range of vacuums.

We use Henrys when there is a lot of hard floors & thin office carpets - the suction is great (change or empty the bag often), the cord is long & they are reliable & hard wearing.

Henrys for thick carpets aren't great. We use Dysons, but we do have to fully clean them & change/wash the filters fairly often.

We use VAX cordless too, whilst the suction isn't the best, they do a job for stairs & basements etc.

I am going to put this in bold as i feel its something to shout about
you can get a cordless Henry

I shit you not, there is a rechargeable henry.
I have no idea if he's any good, as he's about a million pounds but i was gob smacked when i saw one in a shop being used.

donajimena · 27/01/2017 12:11

I'm a cleaner and if I do any domestic cleaning and I see they have a dyson I sigh..
The uprights are crap for stairs, skirtings and cobwebs.
The cylinder ones are ok but it fecks me off no end that I have to change sockets because the cord is too short.
For thick carpets I have a special head with a rotating brush. I wouldn't have any other.
I do love the miele but its not hard wearing enough.

DH is self employed and does some cleaning work and would only use a Henry. We have one at home and I have no issues with it. We have a small Hoover in the loft bedroom so we don't have to lug Henry up 2 flights of stairs. DH hates dysons- he says they literally suck up your carpets

bouncydog · 27/01/2017 19:49

On 3rd dyson animal - number 1 was a refurb when we bought number 2, which I smashed the bottom of during building work so now have a big ball animal! Fantastic - lowest setting and it cleans the carpets brilliantly. Thought about a Henry as friends love it, but we have a bungalow so for us an upright is best. They are expensive though - this one was over £300!

DementedUnicorn · 27/01/2017 19:52

I look after a little old lady who was a sales rep when younger. She unfortunately has dementia now but always makes me smile by informing everyone frequently that "You Hoover the floor- you don't Dyson it" Grin

MrsHughesCarson · 27/01/2017 19:57

I am a housekeeper and have used many hoovers in my career. My all time favourite is a Miele.

Mcchickenbb41 · 28/01/2017 08:14

We have a Henry. Poor beaten up old thing. We use him for all the crap jobs. We've knocked walls down in the house and the mess that caused was unbelievable. I would never use my dyson when decorating always our trusty Henry. They just keep going

Mcchickenbb41 · 28/01/2017 08:19

Sorry should just point out that the Henry is only used for hardcore mess because he's about 15 yrs old and all the attachments are lost and I think he's on last legs. But I know a lot of people that would choose them over any other Hoover for general housework.

dollybird · 28/01/2017 10:22

And only around £100

Mehfruittea · 28/01/2017 15:12

I'm having an extension built in the next few months, I might invest in Henry to sit alongside Dyson and miniDyson.

The truth about Henrys:

They were designed for professional cleaning. You seen them in commercial cleaning because they're so reliable, reasonably priced and easy to fix. Plus, the tools are all interchangeable between models.

They're really good on that kind of flat, glued down, hard wearing office carpet & on hard floors, but not so great on domestic carpet, especially on pet hair.

Thankfully, Numatic now offer models that are designed more for the home, like HenryXtra that comes with the pet hair tools and a proper hard floor tool, but the bog standard ones aren't all that good if you have lots of carpets

GreenFirefly · 28/01/2017 15:32

I hate our Henry. DH likes it for diy purposes but I'll be glad to see the back of him. I want an upright that doesn't need two bits moving around everywhere knocking paint off skirting boards and falling over everywhere.

rabbit123 · 28/01/2017 15:43

GreenFirefly, we have a Henry in the garage and a Sebo upright in the house. Henry cleans the cars & messy DIY clean up, Sebo does the normal house cleaning

Jins · 28/01/2017 15:52

I hate my Henry. Useless piece of junk. If you like dusty carpets then Henry's just the job. If you want to actually suck the dust and dirt out then don't get a Henry. Sebo or Miele are the only brands I'll buy nowadays

This thread has galvanised me to get rid of him actually.

NoFucksImAQueen · 28/01/2017 16:22

We had a Hetty for years and she was fine, if not a bit annoying with all the falling over.
We now have a shark rotator and I love it. So much easier to push around, empty and lighter than hetty despite being and upright vacuum

NoFucksImAQueen · 28/01/2017 16:23

Talbot I am so jealous or your two roombas

cuddlebug · 30/01/2017 00:59

Henry Hoover has an amazing suction power.

MakeItStopNeville · 30/01/2017 02:30

I live in the States and have had about 40 different vaccuum devices (including Roombas) over the last 10 years. Nothing, literally NOTHING, compares with the Henry I left at home.

popcornpaws · 30/01/2017 10:58

I've always had dysons, love them but once bought a henry as they came highly recommended on MN.
Big mistake!!
The guy was a prick and he was clumsy, the hose was too long, i kept tripping over it, he was hard to store and i hated using it.
Went back to dyson and all is well again, never again will i buy a henry, he's an arsehole of a vacuum.

hihat · 27/09/2020 13:44

@LittleBoat

Henry is a glory grabbing attention seeker. He is the favourite child. Poor Hetty never gets a mention.
Oh, Hetty gets enough attention. Harry is the one left out.
Happydaysforever123 · 27/09/2020 15:50

We used to have a Henry at the nursery I used to work at, it was a useless piece of junk! I used to curse the thing everytime I used it as it was hopeless at picking up.
I've also used it at holiday cottages and it was useless there too.

Happydaysforever123 · 27/09/2020 16:09

Not the same Henry obviously, I didn't take him on holiday Grin

diamond4u · 06/10/2020 00:39

I had a Henry and hetty. Hated them both. Absolutely rubbish. Cleaners and woke places use them as it's cheap and easier to carry around. It can get battered and bruised and still work lol. Dyson is too expensive to replace for work purposes.
I have a dyson cordless. Best thing ever!!
