a mop that cleans the floor, not just move dirty water about?

I have 2 small DC, food generally hits the kitchen floor during mealtimes in and I often don't have the awareness or time to wipe up splashes or small spills that day immediately. We have a vileda Magic mop which doesn't do much more than push water about like a sponge & the abrasive bit is pretty useless. Any suggestions for it's replacement?

why would you want to kill bacteria?

I'm a sadist.

OneWithTheForce · 25/01/2017 21:29

How do you clean the head of that merry? Does it come off to wash? Is it machine washable?

kirkyj · 25/01/2017 21:49

Am actually surprised the Vielda mop doesn't clean the floor, if your having real problems with it, it might be time for you to try a spray mop This mop is more ideal for wood and laminate floors.

MerryMarigold · 25/01/2017 21:51

You swish it in a bucket of water and then squeeze all the excess off. I don't like those mop heads you need to wash. I used to go through about 5 just doing the kitchen floor as I don't like 'cleaning' the floor with a filthy mop. This one you can just keep rinsing it out like an old fashioned mop, but it really does get rid of most of the water when squeezed out.

Thanks merry!

My floor is slate and it needs to get really wet to clean in all the rough parts. That jml mop looks great, thank you!

Don't ever get a slate floor. It's pretty, but it's filthy all the time

Avengerhart85 · 25/01/2017 22:09

Mop first then steam mop over it for the smears (with zoflora ovs coz it's the best thing ever!)

mlr1uk · 25/01/2017 22:13

I use a flash power mop. You buy the solution and pads when needed. Throw the dirty pad away when used. It smells nice too

From eBay, wilko, Asda etc

I use a dolly mop (i.e. a string mop that can be washed on a hot wash in the machine). Clean with plenty of hot water with Flash or similar, wring the mop out and go over the floor again to soak up most of the dirty water. Then I further dry the floor by walking around it with on old towels. This soaks up the dirty water. Sounds bizarre I know but it does the job. I have 2 mop heads so change the head part way through if it's looking dirty. I looked at getting a steam mop but we have very ancient Amtico and I think it might damage the flooring (Amtico don't recommend using steam mops).

Clankboing · 25/01/2017 22:26

I use mops but find it best if I just get down on my knees and clean with a cloth. I'm not proud :-/

Alwayscheerful · 26/01/2017 09:53

I have tried them all, I love my e-mop and water. For quick in between cleans I use the vileda spray mop and fill the hands with zoflora or method almond floor cleaner. I agree nothing beats getting down on your hands and knees and getting in to the corners.Smile

Alwayscheerful · 26/01/2017 12:24

Fill the handle not hands

misblink · 26/01/2017 12:30

I spray flash bleach and pour boiling water on. Swoosh around with mop. Then hands and knees with a cloth! Takes ages but gets floor super clean and is a good workout!

EmNetta · 27/01/2017 00:46

Mine's simpler than the power mop as it just uses a disposable damp square from a pack of 15 for about £1.20 , most supermarkets having their own brands.

Everyone who sees it wants one, shame there's no name on it, but friend found something similar in Wilkinsons for about £7. Reading here, not found anything which seems to work better/quicker/cheaper, and some wipes are anti-bacterial too.

Just bought a Addis one from The Range. Excellent. Looks exactly like theJML one but cheaper, think it was 7.99 super mop or something. With the handle that you push down to squeeze water out and it's great. I have a grey slate slightly uneven floor and a wooden laminate in kitchen diner. It's great. Debenhams have the JML one on offer at moment but still more money than Addis one, x

hollyisalovelyname · 28/01/2017 20:39

You can get a 2 compartment bucket on Amazon. You squeeze the dirty mop water into one side.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 28/01/2017 21:43

Don't ever get a slate floor. It's pretty, but it's filthy all the time

Can I add riven sandstone to that?actually, I no longer live with that nightmare floor, but now have travertine which is apparently really good quality, but needs a complete re-haul to sort out the filth-filled cracks and pits and make it look like human beings walk on it and not pigs.
Anyway, the guy from the cleaning company said that the worst culprit for making floors filthy is floor-cleaning fluids. Typically, people get their lovely new floor, swear that they'll keep it pristine, then go out and buy every type of floor cleaner they can find. You can never rinse them off so using this stuff on a natural floor is apparently like washing your hands with soap but not rinsing tnem - dirt sticks.
Anyway, you have been warned - hot water only is the way to go.
That doesb't answer the question about mops though!

bump6 · 28/01/2017 21:57

There's a mop with bucket. Bucket has 2 compartments for clean & dirty water.
It also has a spin device so you can wring water out of mop!

annandale · 28/01/2017 22:02

The e-cloth mop is the only one worth having in my view - it is fantastic. But make sure you get at least 2 cleaning cloths to start you off, 3 if you are a clean freak. You also can use chemicals with it if you want to, if my floor is really sticky I will chuck a bit of spray on the worst bits before doing it.

hollyisalovelyname · 29/01/2017 10:35

Bump6
Can you do a link please.

321zerobaby · 29/01/2017 10:49

I agree about the hot water only being the way to go with floor cleaning. I have black sparkly ceramic tiles, and have tried mops, steamers etc, floor always looked worse than when I started. Hot water and a microfibre cloth seems to make it look best and stay cleanest for longer.

Mendeleyev · 29/01/2017 10:54

Do you need a bucket with the JML one? Or it is one that stores the cleaning fluid in the handle? It's hard to see from the picture.

purplecollar · 29/01/2017 11:02

QOD and Merry - I'm following with interest. Can I ask you would that mop store behind a kitchen door? Or is it quite bulky?
