Mould on mattress

Ugh, help.
Just went to change DD1's sheets and I turned over the mattress to be faced with a giant patch of mould. It's one of the washable ones so I whipped off the cover and have stuck it in the washing machine on a boil wash. The foam bit of the mattress has about a 5p piece size bit of darkening, but it doesn't look like it's taken hold much (waterproof lining on mattress cover must have held it at bay). Can I put anything on it to save it or is it a goner?

Disclaimer: it's not me that usually changes the sheets and DP never turns mattresses. I'm so embarrassed this has happened. Poor DD. Blush

I would try one of the mould and mildew sprays. They contain bleach.

Turn and air the mattress frequently from now on.

Give the mattress a small squirt of neat bleach and leave it. Also all the mould may not come out the protector so you may need a new one. Is the room particularly cold? You need to find out the cause of the camp to stop it coming back

Mould not camp Confused

Yes the room is cold, we're having the windows replaced in January which should solve it though. I think it's from where she spilt some milk and DP just flipped the mattress instead of cleaning it. She has a pop up tent thing at the top of the bed that I think has stopped the airflow through the slats and has given it room to breed. I have mould killer sprays because our house is damp until January but I was just unsure of if they would be safe to use. Fingers crossed the cover comes out okay. It's thick so will provide some protection. Will definitely be airing and turning from now on!

The room will need air and heat to get rid of the damp if that makes sense? I have the same in my bedrooms so alway open the windows for a couple of hours in the morning and have the heating on. Could you maybe close the curtains or blinds in the afternoon to let the room heat up after it's had a good air?

FrankAndBeans · 05/12/2016 14:39

Well I have scrubbed the crap out of the mattress cover and it's completely clear so fingers crossed it stays that way. Thanks for the advice, it's so cold in there as we only have a metal single glazed ancient window. I can't wait to have our new windows now! I've just ordered some dehumidifier too. The window only has a tiny top window that won't open far so airing the room is a bloody pain too. I'll just have to be more on the ball.

as long as the mattress is not so bad that it needs throwing out i would give it a spray with this mould cleaner
