We rescued someone from a poor rental accommodation. We got a phone call and responded. The person needed our help. We brought them home. Our house became infested with Bed Bugs.

Usually the studious kind. Spouse reckoned I am OCD when it comes to cleaning. Steam Vac freak. But the Bed Bugs still took a hold. Fumigation of house every three months. Due to not liking creatures in house at all. Insect live outside us indoors.
Bed Bugs did not stay upstairs. We thought. Contaminated rooms upstairs we would sleep downstairs until problem sorted. Did not work. Infestation downstairs. Medical equipment user. Ridge up Oxygen Tent to try and get restful sleep. Basically, camping indoors. Bugs still managing to get inside Tent despite, hospital disinfection routine. Basically, night time routine became scrub down procedure used in surgery. No use still had problems.
Pest Controllers finally turned up. (It was hard as I wanted the heat treatment) which I heard is the only sure way of getting rid. But no one in our area did it. And they would not come up from the Capital.
The Guys were marvellous. But that gave bad news. BED BUGS ONCE IN ARE NORTIOUSLY HARD TO GET RID OF. I was convinced they could do the job. Spent night in hotel, de-contaminated ourselves. Every stitch of clothing we had went to Laundrettes cost a fortune. As washing machine broke under the strain. All bedding dumped. All Carpets Rugs got rid of. First treatment didn’t work.
Got rid of friend’s bed mattress, our mattresses and settee. Second treatment, Still signs. Now concerned as went to doctors one had got in my Ear!!! Being bitten every day. Nightmare. Used remedies found on blogs like these.
Short Term use put Vicks vapour rub on body exposed. Particularly on back and face (mine the eyes), and arms bare from nightclothes. Feet. Try to sleep. Felt one bite but no more. Peace at last. Trouble is body sweats in night sweats Vicks off. Then the biting starts again.
Isopropyl became another routine sprayed clothes and disinfected oxygen tent before getting in. Still managed to get bit in Tent.
Doctors issued anti-histamines for body treatments. They were useless. That’s when I discovered that Scabies are a form of BED BUGS nesting on the host. Not those unhygienic sorts honest. Becoming an embarrassment. Threw out the last of the settees and beds.
All wardrobes upstairs went All possessions dump outside so he could spray. Anything that came back into the house was thoroughly clean with heat treatment and boiled washed.
Back garden looks a nightmare. Now trying to find someone to get rid of contaminated waste.
Rebuilding house decided on tiles ground floor area as it was wooden before. Just in case of re-occurrence. Friend donated furniture to us and we purchase another settee. Christmas coming. Husband avoids friends at work because of it.
This morning got up looked on donated chair so grateful for it. Discovered something. Got husband and friend to check. BED BUG ALERT. Threw chair out immediately. Here we go again.
Can’t afford this. If we don’t get rid, we will lose our jobs as no one wants to infect their premises. Can’t see relatives do not want to cross contaminate. Docs are not much help. Medication does not work. Research comes from sites like these. Tried homeopathy heard Lavender Oil works to keep them off body. It did the first two times but then they begin to adapt to it. Eventually they ignored it.
Friend, called us as they had lost their job because of it. We are scared we might lose ours and we are nearing pensionable age.

Back to the drawing board with Pest Controllers.
Fourth time lucky Right.

Want to know we are telling the person who had them to sue their landlord. But they are reluctant because they reckon they was kind to them.
Should we insist as it has cost us a fortune trying to get rid of here.

Wow, what an unfortunate thing to happen to you. I'm so sorry that you're in this situation. I'm sorry but I have no idea if your friend should sue their landlord or not, I guess it could be more expense and your friend could get nowhere, it's a difficult one.

We once had a lucky escape from an infestation, when we were very close to having them in our house I looked online and read how difficult it is to get rid of them, I honestly don't know what else you could do Flowers

Helsinkimorning · 05/12/2016 21:33

They are very common. The housing association I work for has continuous calls from tenants who have infestations of them, often from visitors who bring them in their suitcases. I feel for you.

AndShesGone · 06/12/2016 07:48

How do Americans get rid of them, there's loads over there isn't there?

specialsubject · 07/12/2016 18:49

OP sounds American so laws will be different.

bed bugs can be brought in by someone who previously stayed in a hotel (however posh) or lots of other places.

BTW homeopathy doesn't work. Herbalism might.

I was thinking about this when I was looking for a second hand sofa. Scared myself into not bothering, now I am glad!
