If you have damp...

Is it possible that a damp course will solve the problem (once guttering, which may or may not be the problem, has been fixed).

Or do you have to start off with a damp free house?

You can definitely fix damp. DP would know more, but he's away till Tuesday.

A damp proof course will sort it if it's rising damp, i.e. coming up through the floor. If it's penetrating damp, i.e. coming through the walls because of broken guttering, then a damp proof course will make no difference. You don't need to start out with a dry house - it will dry out once the problem is solved. Third option though could be condensation from inside the house.

Well, thats positive, thank you

Dampproof course plus replastering where necessary sorted our old house out. Of course you only need a new dampproof course if that's part of the problem. If it's simply guttering then fixing that should eventually dry the damp out.

Dampproofing companies often do free surveys. I had one on my old flat - he took one look at it, said "it's condensation", checked the dampness of the all and confirmed that it wasn't a damp problem, just condensation. All free of charge.

We also had damp due to a leaking (but otherwise working fine) dishwasher. As soon as we fixed it the damp dried.

Anyone know how much it costs for a damp proof course?

Did you not get a survey when you bought it?

PanicPants · 12/02/2007 19:49

Yes we did, and the survey did detect damp, so we had a more detailed survey done specifically with damp in mind, and they said (at the time) that the readings were negliable and that we didn't need to do anything at that time.

I guess as time has gone on, whatever is causing the problem has got worse . We are having our guttering re-done next week so maybe that will help.
