They are all busy tidying

ComeOVeneer · 09/02/2007 19:12

I only manage it now because we have moved to a seriously bigger house and have a laundry room, study and playroom. We have basically doubled the size of our house yet without buying any new stuff have managed to fill the new house (but in an uncluttered way).

My only tip is "little and often". I find if I neglect the house for a few days (say if I am ill) it takes ages to get it back on track. However if I do some every day it is pretty easy to kepp itup to scratch (although I wouldn't say it is as pristine and uncluttered as a show home).

hana · 09/02/2007 19:13

haha
I get rid of mail as soon as it it through the door (file it away or throw it away)
recycle newspapers, mags etc as soon as I've read them.
catalogues - only keep them near to xmas, then chuck

keep on top of laundry
if something needs putting away, put it away when you see it, don't wait til you have a moment ( you never do)
regulary go through toys to streamline

Fattytwoshoes · 09/02/2007 19:15

i kow it#s gonna take me a good day to get it all done, have small house

Take a look at the Fly (flylady followers) threads

I discovered Flylady about 3 years ago. She does talk perfect sense and it didn't take me long to start getting into it. Decluttering works, but you also have to stop yourself from recluttering, lol! I find that has become much easier that it is second nature now to consider if I really need something, or really love it enough to keep an item I'm given. Less stuff = less to manage.

The other thing is the Do It Now principle which Flylady recommends. Bit like stitch in time saving nine thinking.

Try it. You might be very glad you did!

Finally, the motto for this year is Progress not perfection in 2007. Soooo apt!

Fattytwoshoes · 09/02/2007 19:33

thanks twinklingstar, sorry to sound stupid but what does apt mean? it's probably really simple but my brain has stopped working, lol.
I need to do something it's affecting my health iyswim. I want to do it i just don't konw where to start seems such a mountain to climb, lol.

if you are 'apt' to do something, you are 'likely' to do something

Fattytwoshoes · 09/02/2007 19:41

ohhh i see i thought it was short for something, lol i feel so silly now. lol.

Easy mistake to make on boards such as this, I am still learning

By apt I meant suitable/appropriate. Certainly is for me. Thing is, we think it all has to be perfect, dishes done, living room tidy, laundry all done - when in fact, the very act of living in a place means that it isn't like that for long, is it?

Progress not perfection is a lovely slogan that praises effort and doesn't let us beat ourselves up because the magazines are left trewn amongst the lego, etc! Kids still have to play, but getting them to put away one thing before getting out the next makes sense.

I have a lovely fridge magnet which says 'my house was clean last week - sorry you missed it!' But I am trying, and I can really see a difference over time. Like us all, I wished it was overnight, but short of getting those tv folk in who sort out the house with a crew of two dozen cleaners and organiser-types, it will just have to happen the slow way.

Get rid of a some clutter every day. I so understand your feeling of not knowing where to begin and being exhausted at the very thought. You are right, it does affect your health. And your emotions. But you can do it, a bit at a time, and that is the secret, really.

You are onto a good start already 'cause you know you have just had enough of how things have been and want to sort it. There is help to encourage you and noone is going to beat you with a big stick if you don't do your dishes till the next morning, but after a while you will realise that those days happen far less often; you will begin to feel more in control and the house will improve. You can't change how the rest of the household think, it has to come from you first, and with a bit of luck, might rub off on them

Go for it!!!!!!!!!!!

twinklingstar · 09/02/2007 23:54

strewn not trewn! Doh! I should go to bed, night night!

Fattytwoshoes · 10/02/2007 10:21

didn't see this bit last night. Thanks i will i think in my head i really want to do it. I will do it. i'm fed up of living in a mess and then panicing if someone says they are coming over to see me.

i suppose i should start small and not think to tackle it all at once. lol. ty for your help.

I feel like this. It would be so much easier if we had a utility room as my kitchen / landing is always clogged up with washing and airers. Never mind.

I agree with not putting things off. If it needs to go upstairs, then take it up. Don't just leave it in a pile on the stairs.

princessmel · 10/02/2007 10:41

so !!!

rachfran · 10/02/2007 13:11

I leave piles and piles of things on the stairs. I too panic if there is a knock on the door or sombody says they are going to visit. I am going to start today on the samllest room in the house and aim to declutter and clean it by tomorrow evening. Am ready with bin bags, boxes and flash wipes!
