Is life too short to sort laundry

UntidyAn0n · 03/10/2016 21:27

I'm very fussy about sorting loads, whites and colours, darks, towels etc. I put treatments in and have glowing whites. But today I thought stuff it and shoved the days laundry and a colour catcher in the machine and switched it on (wildest thing I've done all year! Wink)
Am I destined for grey whites?

Blimey at you lot with all your separating Shock.

60 degrees pants tops bedding towels tea towels

40 degrees socks trousers jumpers

But I hand wash things if the colour runs, every new item of clothing gets a dunk under a hot tap after it's been worn for the first time then wrung out and if there's any colour comes out it gets handwashed. That equates to maybe one thing per week.

I always thought I was a washing freak until I read some of this thread! DH used to bung it all in together when we first met which drove me crazy. He's been trained now.

Whites
Light colours
Darks
Jeans and DH work wear (he's a spark)
A dark and lights towels and bed linen at 60 degrees
Wool
Sports wear with a capful of Zoflora

All done with non-bio powder straight in the drum.

There is only one washing bin but takes no time to separate.

I love a white wash on the line too.

I have

  • towels and bedding (white)
  • darks (jeans, greys, blacks - will include one or two dark navy towels that can't go in the above)
  • greeny blues
  • reddy browny yellows
-whites -sports
  • woolly delicates.

It looks a bit weird written down, granted ..... Grin

Sammysquiz · 04/10/2016 12:23

I do 4 separate loads - darks, lights, whites & towels. Some of you must have ginormous electricity bills Smile

avocadosweet · 04/10/2016 12:39

I separate into lights, darks, towels and sheets. Sometimes pinks. DH tried to be helpful and put a wash on at the weekend but he hadn't separated it, so I stopped it, separated all the sopping wet stuff and put it back in! I took a cupful of the water out to show him and it was grey - I do not want my baby in grey whites! We got a bagful of hand me down baby clothes from someone who doesn't separate laundry, it was really obvious and the things look much more worn than they actually are.

YoungBritishPissArtist · 04/10/2016 12:45

I don't own anything white, not even bedding or towels. Makes laundry much simpler Grin

AverageGayLadAtChristmas · 04/10/2016 20:47

  1. Open Washer

  2. Bung in clothes

  3. Start washer and move on

Grin None of my clothes have ever mixed or faded

Lazyafternoon · 04/10/2016 20:47

Lol wow. DH laughs at me for my sorting.... we have a 3 section laundry basket. Whites, reds and darks. That's it. When a section is full it gets washed. I use two programs on the washing machine - 40° Short or 40° Long. Delicate stuff goes in a delicates padded bag thing in with everything else.

So yes life is too short to sort washing. Get a multi section laundry basket ;-)

pearlgirl · 04/10/2016 20:50

We do towels and bedding, whites, pants and socks (easier to keep track of socks for 6 this way for me), tea towels and dishclothes. It seems like a lot of loads but machine only goes on when it is light and uses the solar panels so I can be faddy at little cost.

Lynnm63 · 04/10/2016 20:51

I sort in a way. Darks wash covers most non whites, whites I like my boys school shirts to be white. Towels and bedding. Sometimes things get a quick wash.

MyMorningHasBroken · 04/10/2016 20:53

I just do darks, mediums (blues, pinks, vibrants ect)and very lights/whites.
I'm about to give up on the ironing though apart from the uniforms and work clothes!

elh1605 · 04/10/2016 20:55

I've always separated colours and darks. When met dh it became whites, colours and darks, bedding and towels. When do was born- dd''s whites, colours and darks then our whites, colours and darks, bedding and towels. Now she's older it's all of ours into whites, colour's and darks, bedding, towels and delicates with separate detergents and stain removers. I hate off whites especially on kids and in a previous job used to do all whites at 90` to make sure they were white (and yes shrunk a few things!!)

MissClarke86 · 04/10/2016 20:56

Everything goes in together. I don't have anything that's purely white though.

This thread has opened my eyes to a whole new world.

Headofthehive55 · 04/10/2016 20:57

You don't see the difference as you have no comparison. Take two white hankies and wash one in the darks a few times and compare. Particularly with new clothes. The older they are the less dye they release. Also depends what type of dye the clothes have been dyed with and whether it's cotton or nylon.

I separate my laundry. I worked with dyes.....

GingerbreadLatteToGo · 04/10/2016 20:57

Rebel 😬 Hope you enjoyed your flirt with the grey dark side 😁

I sort:

Whites
Darks
Mid colours - sometimes sorted into colours depending on what's there
Linen
Towels - sorted into colours depending on which have been used
Tea towels - whites/lights/darks depending on what's there

Then when I have enough

Dusters
Woollens - lights/darks separated
& random items get their own wash (mats/trainers/cushion covers etc)

MsJudgemental · 04/10/2016 20:59

Just whites if enough of them in summer, otherwise whites and lights (including bedding) with a colour catcher and darks. At most, again in summer, whites, pale blues and darks. NEVER mix whites and dark colours, even with a colour catcher.

Judydreamsofhorses · 04/10/2016 21:01

Generally I just chuck everything in. Towels and bedding a get washed On their own though at a higher temperature.

Piscivorus · 04/10/2016 21:03

I do whites separately and they still come out grey! Bought 3 pairs of lovely white knickers recently and the difference in colour after one pair had been washed was noticeable yet it was a white wash with bio powder

fadingfast · 04/10/2016 21:03

I once got congratulated on the whiteness of my son's school shirts by another mum at the school gates. One of my proudest ever moments Grin. I always sort whites/pales from colours.

whensitmyturn · 04/10/2016 21:04

I do

Whites
Pink/reds/purples
Green/grey/blues/denim
Darks

Towels are all white which makes life easier.
I have also had the odd sneaky white item end up in a dark wash and you can totally tell it looks less white and that was only after 1 wash. God knows how it would look after constant mixing up.

I sometimes mix the colours and dark clothes up but never whites with anything!

bibbitybobbityyhat · 04/10/2016 21:06

NO! Have a little self respect and sort your laundry, people.

I have about 10 different categories of laundry.

To me this question is like "is it actually important to eat vegetables?"

Of course it is!

pictish · 04/10/2016 21:08

10 categories of laundry? No ta. Life is too precious for that.

LowDudgeon · 04/10/2016 21:08

Whites + lights (bio, 40). Whites are staying white.
Colours/black (bio, 40)
Heavy stuff like jeans (bio, 40)
Towels/tea towels/flannels get 2 goes. I know it's excessive but I can't stop now. Bio, 40, for excess grime & then non-bio, 60, for hygiene. They do smell lovely & clean Smile
