Fruit flies are ruining my life!

Ok, a bit dramatic I know but they are driving me insane! I have a beautiful new modern kitchen (stealth boast) and I keep it lovely and clean but they hang around like flies round.....fruit. I fear they sneak into my Slimming World dishes and may be the reason I am putting on weight they so definitely are!
Give me your tips ladies, before I have to go up a dress size!

No tips (apart from keeping fruit covered and/or in fridge) but they're doing my head in too. And hanging round the bin. It makes the kitchen seem like it's full of rotting food!

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 27/09/2016 10:18

Rather yucky, but I left my vinegar bottle out and it worked as a trap for hundreds of the blighters!

Unfortunately only realised this when I'd thrown a load of vinegar onto my chips!!

Fly paper is your friend. Hang it near where they like to go. It's not pretty though.

If I've got time I hunt them down with squirted surface cleaner. A few good squirted stops them in their tracks but is probably a bit cruel.

This is a mumsnet tip and it really works: put a banana in a bowl and cover with clingfilm, making small holes in the clingfilm and they fruit flies will get trapped, will also work with red wine. Only thing that ever works for me. I hate them.

DoreenLethal · 27/09/2016 10:25

Fruit flies go for rotting food so you need to clean your kitchen or be better with your covering of food.

horizontilting · 27/09/2016 10:27

They may be sink flies (Disclaimer: read about them on here but am too scared to google them). I now tip a kettle of boiling water down the sink last thing at night, as advised by a poster on that thread, and they have gone away.

Thanks! Great tips, not about to waste wine on the little buggers but I'll give up a banana. I'll have to get one of those fly sticky things too.
At least they added a bit of protein to your chips sissy!
Looks like my tomatos will be returning to the Fridge, goodbye soft tasty vine ripened tomatos 🍅

I second what newlabel said. If you dont have a banana then any fruit will do. Just cut a slice . Good luck. They are such a pain. Makes my kitchen feel really unhygienic!

BlondiBleach · 27/09/2016 12:41

Similar to NewLabel, I swear by same cling film with small hole trick but over a glass with cider vinegar. Cheaper & less stinky. It is the only thing that works for me.

BlondiBleach · 27/09/2016 12:42

I just put one small hall in the cling film

BlondiBleach · 27/09/2016 12:43

*hole
What is wrong with me?? Grin

Just seen this. Do you have pot plants? I had a real problem with what I thought were fruit flies but turned out they were fungus gnats and were living in the damp soil of my pot plants. Sadly I had to get rid of the plants as I couldn't find a cure but at least I now have a fly free house.

As others have suggested fly catchers are your best bet. Hang em up where ever they are comming in from.

TheQuestToStopPigeonWoppie · 30/09/2016 21:01

Hoover them.

Seriously, it works really well if they're clustering round the fruit bowl, or in the kitchen bin. A few will escape, to be sure, but it might get half or three quarters, and fly paper and vinegar can keep up the assault with the rest.

Plus, it's fun. Grin

Best empty your hoover outside tho, as some might survive the suck!
