make sure you hoover lots as well

and use allergy mattress / duvet / pillow covers

and wash bedlinen at 60c every week and duvet pillow etc at 60c a few times a year as well

Im allergic to dust mites / dust and its amazing the difefrence these few things make to my sleep and my eyes not itching etc

tissy · 05/02/2007 19:59

BUT hoover when child isn't going to be in the room for a while, as hoovering can stir things up a bit!

Other advice I got from Allergy Foundation was:

Don't make the beds, make sure the duvet is draped over a chair to let it and the bed get some air (house dust mites prefer it warm and damp).

Open the window during the day (for same reason)

Get rid of unnecessary soft furnishings (cushions, carpets, rugs etc).

Put favoutite soft toy in a bag in the freezer for 12 hours or so once a week (kills mites).

Keep other toys (soft and otherwise) in plastic boxes with lids to stop them gathering dust.

thanks for the replies, anyone going to tell me how often they wet dust?

I do all the things Tissy suggested, vacuum clean every week, wash the bed linen every 4 days but it was not until yesterday that I read about the difference wet dusting does (I was using those dry towels and dusters that attract the dust and the vacuum cleaner -has heppa filter and all those anti allergy artifacts but at the end of the day it can only do so much)

I have washed the floors with boiling water and it is making a slight difference.

Chandra · 05/02/2007 22:22

But I have the same question... how ofter should I do it?

dreamteamgirl · 05/02/2007 22:27

Hiya Chandra

I wet dust about 2-3 times a week. Its hard to do it at a time DS isnt going to need to go in the room, so it tends to be Fri night when I get home at 5pm, Sunday morning and once in week, usually Wednesday morning if I cn find time.

I never remember to stick his softies in freezer, but he does have a super dooper anti allergy matress which seems to be helping

I have also just bought a Cat and Dog Miele Hoover, whch is brill. Tht gets done jst once a week cos I work fulltime

brimfull · 05/02/2007 22:31

thnaks,I'm going to make an effort and do it every other day. It's the keeping it tidy to get to the dusting that's the pain.

OP posts:
Chandra · 05/02/2007 22:33

Thanks for that.

Would you remember the name of the maker of your supper dooper anti allergy mattress?

Love the Miele I have the Solution one (same as Cat and Dog but with an extra thingy for wooden floors). Previous one was a Dyson and they are nowhere near... much better and... cheaper. [commercial add over[.]]

Chandra · 05/02/2007 22:35

Since starting with the Flylady thing I have realised that my only chance of managing dusting often is to have fewer and fewer things on the surfaces... the situation is, slowly (very slowly), improving.

Nemo2007 · 05/02/2007 22:38

I keep DDs room hoovered every day[she has carpets as it was redecorated for Ds when pg with DD but then got pg with DD2 so had to keep carpet]and dust around it about twice a week.Although if see something particularly dusty I do use baby wipes to give quick sweep.

dreamteamgirl · 05/02/2007 22:48

Hi Chandra

I do remember it was this one asthma mattress as I only bought it last week, but ask them to price match mattresses on line at £105 . Matress Centre (www.mattresscentre.co.uk) are cheaper but have one of those poxy 0870 numbers that I refuse to deal with, so was chuffed when MOL agreed to price match

Also agree, decluttering is only way forward

Thanks for that off to check it now

I damp dust every 2 days in dd's bedroom. What has made the biggest difference is a dust mite cover for her pillow. Her bear also goes for a skiing holiday....ie goes in the freezer in an air tight bag.....once a week. I get her to put it in as she goes to school and he's ready to come out 12 hours later!
I also put her duvet in the sun most days and air it.

I wet dust with babywipes, they seem to work really well.
