HELP - Oven cleaner that wont strip my skin off.

I saw something in the paper a while ago about some home made oven cleaner you can whip up with stuff from the kitchen - does anyone know what it is and if it works.

Im terrified of the spay on stuff as I am sure I will strip off all my skin, and destroy my sink and STILL have a foul oven.

bicarbonate of soda and lemon juice/white vinegar.

v easy. non toxic

and wire wool! if you do it when the oven is hot, you can use a sharp knife too to peel the layers of goo off.

So do I leave it on overnight?

Is that lemon juice or white vinegar or do I need both and is there a recommended quantity?

Ive got all of those so the oven might actually get done (the can of Mr Muscle has been in the cupboard 2 years but im too scared to use it - reading the cautions is always a mistake)

Got this off another site (redpepper i think) as I need to tackle this this week:

Make a paste of bicarbonate of soda, salt and hot water. Leave on for 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

Sounds too tame for cleaning ovens - possibly only works for ovens that get cleaned every week or something - but by gum I'll give it a try!

Well all these mega new oxy cleaners use oxygen so I imagine thats what bicarb does but I would imagine a warm oven makes the difference. My oven has 6 years of crap on it so it needs tackling!

I read somewhere that sprinkling biological washing powder on any grease build-up on your hob works.

Also, to clean grease off the bottom of the oven, sprinkle liberally with salt when warm - the salt absorbs the grease and you can wipe it out.

Brillo pads always good if you add elbow grease!

i can highly reccommend lakelands ovenmate - It's sooo easy, it's like a gel, paint it on and leave for a few hours then effortless wipe it off with kitchen roll. No Smell, no mess, no elbowgrease, nothing except an oven that looks like its brand new!

I saw ovenmate but thought I needed to do it NOW before I lose interest and it goes another 6 years

Ovenmate is great - but you do have to be careful (as it says it the pack) about what you use it on. Worked well for my oven itsefl, but it took the paint off the hob. Luckily I'd only done a "patch test".

My mum's top tip about hobs (and it works) is just to pour water onto it and leave it. After 30 mins or so, wipe off.
