HAVING A KITCHEN FITTED ON A BUDGET - HELP

peegeeweegee · 03/02/2007 13:00

We have decided to have a new kitchen fitted.
Our budget is around £2500 MAX (incl. tiles, appliances etc)

Have any of you recently had a kitchen fitted for that sort of money - if so who did it for you?

Have discounted Moben, Magnet etc as even with their sales on it would go over our budget.

Am in particular interested in Wickes or Ikea - I believe both of whom now offer a fitting service.

Any experience? Good or bad - pleas tell all!!

Thanks in advance!!

ikea free standing range is very cheap, very stylish and also you don't need to pay a fortune to fit it and there's no worktos to pay extra for either. they have about 3 or 4 different types.

We've just had our kitchen done and didn't bother with tiles, you can get brushed stainless sheets to go around or clear perspex both look good.

Also does that price include the floor?

What appliances do you need?

Hi Furball, thanks for the reply!!

Would need to do something with the floor - tiling would probably be the best option.
I need a new oven and hob, and extractor. Am hoping to get them in stainless steel.
Was thinking of wooden worktops with an 'upstand' rather than wall tiles. And perhaps a stainless splashback behind the cooker.

Have posted before about the ikea freestanding range, love it but am unsure of the practicalities - all these gaps between units for crumbs to fall through etc...

I've got some friends who bought an Ikea kitchen and fitted it themselves

do you have a dp who is handy with a hammer?

Furball · 03/02/2007 16:07

How big is your kitchen?

ska · 03/02/2007 16:15

We ran out of money when we did our extension and ended up buying aflat pack kitchen from Do It All and paying the builder £500 to put it in. The flat pack stuff cost £350 I think. We spent good money on a double sink and on better than average worktops (but not wood or any thing as too expensive). IKEA was too expensive. That was 6 years ago and it's still abolutelyfine. Wish we could ahev anew one but it seems like a waste now it functions and still looks fine.

DP (carpenter/builder) doesn't reckon you'll be able to buy one and get it fitted, tiled etc for that price.

However, for units he suggested Howdens as they do budget ranges -you have to open an account with them so you might have to blag it a bit unless you know a tradesperson who already has an account there.

Also you could try and get a sale/ex-display one from somewhere like B&Q.

Keep pushing for a better price wherever you go though as, at the end of the day, they all want to make sales.

If you go round all the tile warehouses you might find an end of range/sale range for the floors and walls. We were lucky and got some great ones for our utility a couple of weeks ago.

Thanks for that guys - figured it would be tight!!
Have just priced up the kitchens I like from B&Q and Ikea, both come to 3k including appliances etc. Not including floor tiles.

DH is very handy, but works away a lot (he is an engineer and is always sent on installations/projects all over the country) and when he is here the last thing he wants to do is fit a kitchen. May have to persuade him though...

Kitchen is not too big, about 12 by 12 but with one window, one set of french doors out to garden and one stable door to side courtyardy bit, so not a lot of wallspace.

Once again, thanks!!

We've just bought a homebase kitchen for £2500 which includes 12 floor units, 6 wall units, sink, wine rack, integrated dishwasher and fridge, plus housing for oven, 3 3m work surfaces (only laminate though)and under cupboard lighting. Plus of course all the stuff that goes ontop and below the cupboards.

PanicPants · 03/02/2007 17:33

Our kitchen is 6m x 4m (don't know what that is in feet)

But that doesn't include tiles, fitting or oven.

We are still considering the floor tiles and I'm torn between beautiful limestone tiles I've seen, which will cost us £800 to buy and £400 to fit, or cheaper (and nearly indestructable) laminate which really does look like tiles - honestly you'd never know the difference from bog standard ceramic which would prob cost around £300 to buy and free to fit because dp and I could do it.

Hmmm think it will be the laminate after looking at it in writing!

try going to posh kitchen shops and asking when their display kitchens go on sale prices. look in loot etc for people ripping out old ones and refit teh doors from 'ust doors' or similar. and country living this month has a feature on kitchens and lists manufacturers - not all really expensive

find yourself a good joiner and go to howdens, they supply to mfi (my builder told me) we are getting our kitchen extended this week and will be getting any additional items from howdens to match the rest of the kitchen

good luck

Cappuccino · 04/02/2007 12:59
