Can you make your own "ironing water"?

I used to really love the scented ironing water you can get in the UK but you can't buy it in Germany where I live now.

Do you think it would be possible to make some? I tried dissolving the leftover bits of fabric softener in some plain water but it ended up really scummy and musty. It sort of worked - but I probably wouldn't do it again.

You can buy distilled water for irons here, perhaps that plus some essential oils or something? But I don't know whether oils would be a bad idea, leave greasy marks on clothes etc.

Has anyone done it, what would you recommend?

What do you mean 'you can't take liquids on a plane'? Are you always hand luggage?

BertieBotts · 04/09/2016 09:39

Yes. Hold baggage is more expensive than the flight!

Ah, that makes sense!

WatcherOfTheNight · 04/09/2016 14:48

takingsmallsteps are you using the hydrosol that's used as a toner & flavouring?
I've looked on Amazon & that's what's coming up .
Don't want to buy the wrong stuff!

here's the water at £3.50 for 5 litres. Also at Tesco and others on the motoring shelf.

ready for you to add scent.

BertieBotts · 05/09/2016 21:05

Yep. But that doesn't help me as I'm in Germany. I can get the distilled water here anyway though, both in the motoring and laundry sections.

Anyway it seems I'm sorted now :)

Thanks PigletJohnSmile

Would anyone know if I would get the same affect by scenting the water from the tumble dryer or is that completely different?
Really don't want to damage my iron.

PigletJohn · 07/09/2016 00:07

I don't know, but usually Iron manufacturers advise against it because water from driers can contain fluff and dust particles which will clog the iron.

They also advise against defrost water from fridges as it may contain food particles and mould.

Have a look at your Iron instructions or the maker's helpline

It says cooled boiled water.
It's a steam generator but I have been putting 1-2 drops of essential oil in the tank the last few months after reading about it somewhere.
So far it's still working although I'm wondering if the filter will need changing sooner this time.

1 cup distilled water (250ml) 1 tbsp alcohol like surgical spirit or witch hazel and add 20 drops of oil of choice or a blend of oils

i once had three large bottles of rose water for cooking that were nearing expiry date. As it was distilled water i used them in my iron. It smelt nice while ironing and left a faint rose smell afterwards. Maybe something to consider? And if not rose water maybe orange blossom water for cooking?
