Didn't get much response to this in the Products section so hoping I will get more views in here:

I've just had a single oven before but am thinking of getting a double one now (or at least with a seperate grill). I'd love to treat myself to a self-cleaning one but can't find a double oven where the main compartment is self cleaning - does anyone know of one?

If such a thing doesn't exist, would you then go for a normal double oven or a single self-cleaning?

I think I would be too scared to try that - would be afraid the house would have burned down!

You do a dry run when you're at home.
Truly, tis wonderful.
It's my magic button.

Further info from MIL (I thought the brief texts earlier were uncharacteristic, it seems she was in the middle of something so phoned me back to tell me more!)

Yes its a single but loads of room. When you use the self-clean mega-hot thing it takes 1-2 hrs and just leaves white ash in the bottom. She says it really does work. Shes only had to do it 3 times since they got it (beginning of Dec I think?). There is also the option of making it a steam oven apparently, but you have to buy an extra gadget for that.

DON'T BUY BAUMATIC

They are sh*t

I used to work for an interiors mag co and baumatic look the bollox, but break down and are generally rubbish. As someone here says they need to replace theirs after 5 years, it should last double that.

I would look at Neff (pricey but worth it) or De Detrich if you have to.

KTeePee · 02/02/2007 19:47

I was beginning to wonder that crunchie, from reviews I read elsewhere...

Trouble is that Neff only do single ovens with the pyrolytic cleaning and I'd really like a seperate grill. Which leaves De Dietrich which seem to be close to £1000 . (Can't see any JL ones which are self cleaning on the website.)

I have this on from Neff:

double oven

and it keeps itself pretty clean -- it works on a steam cleaning method.

My friend wasn't at the school gates but have emailed her - will get back to you with her reply.

Have the Neff oven USAUKMum suggested (since mid-Dec). It's fantastic and really makes me realise how rubbish our previous one was. (Food cooks much better in it.)
The main oven uses an aqua-cleansing system which means you just pour some water in the bottom of the oven and leave it to run through a cycle (takes 21 minutes). The top oven has enamel plates and again all you need to do is pour some water in and switch it on for 20 minutes. With both ovens you then just wipe it very briefly with the cloth you use to soak up the water afterwards. I SO appreciate not having to gas myself with nasty chemicals to get the thing clean.
I also really like the oven lights - you don't have to open the door to see how your food is- and I also appreciate the handles that fold up as you open the door (have an under-counter version) - sad I know!

USAUKMum · 03/02/2007 08:33

WWIII broke out last night, so didn't get to write much

As with yomellamoHelly I love the oven. I have the built-in one. Which I can't live without. I use all the functions on the oven. Especially love the proving setting & bread baking functions.

Find the oven big enough to cook Christmas dinner for 8. And the buttons resess so easy to clean.

KTeePee · 03/02/2007 10:44

USAUK/umello

I was trying to find out about that type of oven on another thread but had no replies - so thanks!

The Neff ones do seem very good so maybe I will forgo the pyrolytic cleaning and go for the aqua cleansing one instead - thanks for all your help! - just need to sort out dishwasher now!

Can I ask you to double-check which model Neff you have? The one you linked to USAUK doesn't have aquacleansing according to my catalogue (though apparantly it has an "oven cleaning setting")

I have the Neff U1661 oven, which is probably an "old" model being 3 yrs old now . But it has the following functions:
circotherm, conventional, radiant gree (full & centre) circo-roasting, bread-baking, bottom heat, dough proving, hydroclean. The mini oven has conventional, radiant grill (rull & centre element) bottom heat.

HI KTeePee

I forgot to ask my friend so I emailed her. this is her reply:

It's a Miele single pyrolitic oven (self clean to you and me) as I seem to remember no one makes a double self clean - and if they do, it was far too expensive!...so you can team it with whatever second oven you want (I put in a combination oven and microwave, which is brilliant cos it's like two ovens for the price of one). Miele do a range of prices (none of which is particularly cheap) which are all worth double checking on the web (kelkoo etc) and then go to someone like tradeappliances.com/co.uk and get an even better deal, especially if you buy everything for your kitchen through them. Neff is also good and much cheaper - I put that in my last house. However the Miele is completely fantastic, and probably has more programmes than I actually use day to day, but I've just had to call an engineer because it has developed a fault, which though not drastic is a tad annoying.
Hope this helps!

StrangeTown · 03/02/2007 16:31

I've got that Neff aqua clean thing and I am obviously doing something wrong because IT DOESN@T GET THE BLOODY THING CLEAN!

I bung the water in with a bit of cleaning stuff, turn it on and it is still greasy as hell after.
We do use it daily and cook lots of roasts etc, but surely it should come up better than that? I have just cleaned it manually with a hob scraper this morning.

Agree with the Baumatic comment. They are totally c**p. I had one that started having problems within months of buying it. Their customer service was awful and so rude that I refused to have the same guy back. It took almost a year to fix one of the problems and the other one never did get fixed.
If you are in London, go to Harrods to see what is available ... they have great displays and well informed salespeople. Also John Lewis is good for displays and so-so for informed salespeople. Then call around until you get the best price.
