Do you plan things to have in your fridge for when you are back from holiday?

Other than rotting cucumbers, of course?

I find there's nothing more annoying than coming back from holiday with hungry overtired children (and adults), to find that the only edible thing in the house are 2 fish fingers and a can of sweetcorn and I will spare you the description of the inedible stuff.

Up to now, I have never been bothered enough to plan in advance, but since this time we have a late start rather than an early morning one, I though I'd give it a go . Any easy tricks you organised people can suggest?

It is a ritual that we get a dominos for tea when we're just back from holiday. I think it's the kids' favourite part :/ Next morning first thing I go to Lidl where, after Switzerland, I almost wept with joy at things I could afford to eat

Pizza from the freezer of course!

UHT milk, bread in the freezer, a couple of tins of beans, a bag of pasta and a jar of pasta bake sauce. I do an online shop before we go away to be delivered the morning after we get back too.

I'm thinking of ordering in a Tesco shop to be delivered the morning my parents get back from holiday and including things like bread, milk, couple of ready meals, maybe some sliced chicken and baguettes for lunch, cake for tea. Just to help tide them over until they feel more normal from jetlag.

I do an on line order in advance for the morning after we arrive home or that night
I also order on line delivery on departure date as teen oft still here and quite often fresh pasta sauces are still in date when we return .

Ice cube tray fill of milk so I can at least pop one in tea / coffee. I must admit I usually stop off at subway McDonald's Shock on way home

No we never have anything in but then we are 10 mins from the airport so home really fast. There is also a small shop down the road and huge 24hr supermarket is less than 5 mins away. We always plan and have food in airport/on plane so that the kids don't need feeding when we get home. Then while I'm putting kids to bed/dealing with post/sorting cases OH gets sent to the shop for bread and milk.

If you freeze sliced bread it can go straight in the toaster and takes only seconds longer than bread to toast.

I've ordered from Tesco while in Ecuador for when I got back and if I had kids I would consider using Just Eat when you are about an hour from home, or you can preorder from them too.

Our cat sitter leaves bread and milk for us.

MirrorMirrorOnTheFloor · 28/08/2016 21:34

Filtered milk (Cravendale) lasts weeks in the fridge unopened, so I buy that before I go. Sliced bread in the freezer (or bagels) can go straight in the toaster. Eggs last but if you're too tired to cook then it's also handy to have a few ready meals that can go straight from freezer to plate via the microwave.

Plus a Tesco delivery ordered for early the next morning.

cherryminx · 28/08/2016 21:40

Surely all you need is a couple of tins of beans & some bread in freezer.

Pinkheart5915 · 28/08/2016 21:42

Order a take away the night your home just have some biscuit and snacks for the DC until dinner

We order a shop to arrive the morning after we get home

MumiTravels · 28/08/2016 21:46

We just make sure that there's long life milk in. First night we'll just grab a bag of chips then next day it's food shop and washing.

Backingvocals · 28/08/2016 21:52

Cravendale. We can live on toast until I can get to a shop but tea with proper milk as soon as you set foot at home is essential. Especially after being in foreign parts where the heathens attempt to offer Liptons with lemon or UHT Grin
