Can you buy dinner plates that aren't huge?

Despite being well on in years, I have never, ever bought a new dinner service. We had lots of second hand plates given to us when we married and later had a new service bought for us that I didn't like.

So, the time has come when I feel ready to ditch my cracked, chipped and unmatching plates, to buy a new set that I actually like.

The problem is that all modern plates seem to be giant. My current plates are 25cm wide and only just fit in my washing up bowl. The bowl is as large as could buy to fit in my new shiny sink, and we're committed to not having a dishwasher. I'm also getting larger as I get older, so bigger plates won't help this!

So, am I the only person that has come across this problem? Has anyone else managed to find ordinary sized plates? Anything that is 25cm or less would be great. Please help me!

I bought my plates at Nisbets - catering supplier. There is a huge variety of sizes and they are almost all good quality. You don't have to be a caterer to buy from them. (I buy loads of stuff from them for home!).

Next have lovely dinner ware op. Not unreasonable either.

I treated myself to Mindy and Browne plates in a local shop that are lovely too.

I bought some in Dunhelm Mill which were sold as side plates but are plenty big enough for dinner plates. That might be another way of finding suitable sized ones. Definitely helps with portion control, as you say!

Denby plates are smaller than average dinner plates. They have outlets shops all over the country which is tonnes cheaper than buying from John Lewis ect www.denby.co.uk/denby-pottery-village/outlet-locations/pcat/outlet_location

I got my dinner service from the back of my DH's grandmothers cupboard! She bought it hundreds of years ago but had never used it. The side plates are TINY but the dinner plates and bowls are perfect for making sure you don't eat big portions. It's also really old fashioned and I love it.

I agree that the ones you get nowadays are usually ridiculously big and encourage larger portion sizes.
