Let's talk box rooms...

DS's bedroom is 8x10 roughly.

He has lots of stuff he never plays with because he can't see it, ie buried at the bottom of the toy box which has stuff piled on top of it, just to get a bit of floor space.

I need an Anthea-type person to talk me though some sensible storage which makes the best use of space.

Should I be thinking cabin bed?

Floor to ceiling shelving?

Help.

oh yes, cabin bed type thing would be great!
I think floor to ceiling shelving might close the room in a bit - I've seem some lovely cabin bets lately, quite unusual. I'll try to lin k you to them tomorrow KBear as my colleague pointed me in the right direction and I'll see her tomorrow.

dd has just moved into the box room, she is beoing demoted further and further down in this house. Started with box bedroom and big playroom and then justa double bedroom and is now in box room to make way for au pair.

I have converted airing cupboard into her wardrobe, their is a small cupboard which is over the stairs thatshe can use for games. Her books aregoing in a bookcase in the hall and she has another book box case thing in her room . I have ordered her a desk in which shecan store colours and colouring books.

I told her she could have a smaller bedroom and less toys but a nice lady to help look after herand the house and a non stressed mummy or she could have a big room lots of toys but a house thatlooked a tip and a stressed mum and she chose the former. I have basically got rid of about two thirds of her toys so we can manage this and she does not seem that bothered.

twinsetandpearls · 21/01/2007 23:13

dd doesn't ahve a cabin bed as I thought it would make the room look to dark as it would block the window, if I wanted to though I could ahve storage baskets or crates under the bed.

dizzydo · 22/01/2007 14:40

Am very interested in this thread. I too am trying to make something of our box room as is just jammed with rubbish at the moment and not a "spare room" at all. But how do you live without any airing cupboard twinset? Great idea re bookshelves built into the hall.

Skribble · 22/01/2007 21:33

Ikea has some funky and original ideas in their room sets for small rooms.

What about a smaller cabin bed, their are some that are not as high.

Spidermama · 22/01/2007 21:37

My three boys share one big room and they have beds like this - Stompa Casa. They're great. There are many different variations and you might prefer one which has drawers and wardrobe space underneath. Have a look at the Stompa stuff. I got all mine much cheaper on ebay because I had to get four which would have been about four thousand pounds new.

twinsetandpearls · 23/01/2007 00:30

dizzydo still use the top of airing cupboard for bedding and drawers in our room for towels

JanH · 23/01/2007 01:25

For storage you can't go far wrong with Billy bookcase - and you can add a height extender - put all the Stuff into baskets/boxes and you could fit masses into one bookcase. There are more colours in store than on website (see short one below)

If the height is too much you could get 2 short ones - or a combination. They do look really nice - we just got Malm furniture in birch for DS2's room plus a tall Billy

mamama · 23/01/2007 02:03

And the good thing about Billy bookcases is that you can buy doors for them to hid some or all the stuff away! They're a bit expensive, but it makes a huge difference in my house

littlerach · 23/01/2007 07:19

Dd1 has a cbin bed as er room is quite small.
She loves it, as do her friemds, and dd2.
She has acupboard and drawers and a pull out desk underneathh, but it's not too high.

MamaG · 23/01/2007 09:42

some nice beds here Kbear

MamaG · 23/01/2007 13:48

these are FANTASTIC - can be normal, midi or big cabin bed thingies

Kbear · 23/01/2007 14:43

I have decided the best thing is to sell all toys on Ebay! I've been up there for ages and it's a lovely room ... until the toys go back in there!

Haven't got time now but tomorrow I am going to selectively dispose of certain things that I know he never plays with

Thanks for your replies, especially my dear friend MamaG who, contrary to popular belief, has a lovely fanjo which is not in the least bit flat. PMSL

JanH - been checking out the Billy bookcases. Might be forking out for some.

They are dead easy to put together and really sturdy, although they're so cheap - ideal for a child's room. They have loads of random storage baskets and boxes at IKEA too

MamaG · 23/01/2007 15:11

loon

Flamesparrow · 23/01/2007 15:16

I kept seeing this mentioned on the mamag thread and thought I should contribute.

Alas, I know nothing, so will shuffle off again...

Bozza · 23/01/2007 15:44

I totally back up JanH. Both DCs have billy bookcases in their bedrooms. They come with a strap to fit them to the wall.

DD's room is small although not tiny - I think about 10 foot square. The bookcase is on the wall at the end of the bed with a narrow (18 inch?) space between the end of the bed and the book case. This space wouldn't be used otherwise. Good thing about Billy is that it is quite narrow front to back so doesn't stick out into the room too much. She has toys in nice storage baskets - also from Ikea on 4 shelves - so 8 baskets worth of stuff and then books on two shelves. She also has large clear plastic boxes which slide under the bed where the larger toys are stored. She has a wardrobe with drawers and hanging space over that. A gorgeous dressing table from John Lewis, a child sized rocking chair, a play kitchen and a trolley full of food in there. Everything has it's place. Took me most of 27 Dec reorganising it post Christmas!

Lucycat · 24/01/2007 14:28

I am watching this with interest - dd2's room is the smallest so far... 7 foot square!

Shame she's going to be tall - I was hoping we might have the 'glodfish growing to the size of their bowl' theory!

Keep the ideas coming please!

Lucycat · 24/01/2007 14:29

glodfish

clearly I menat goldfish
