Laundry balls - how good are they?

I like the idea of not pouring loads of detergent down the drain (the amount of washing dd generates is mind-boggling!). But I can't convince myself that two little balls in the washing machine will get things clean. Does anyone use them? I'm waiting to be convinced they work before I fork out and buy some!

Are we talking about eco-balls?
I have some. They are fine for day to day stuff but not so great for stains or grimy stuff, but then again, can always use a bit of stain remover occasionally. They are not as good as detergent but they are good enough, and I'm happy to go with that for the sake of the environmental and price benefits.

I've used them in the past, not great TBH, but we live in a hard water area so that may have had something to do with it. Give them a try anyway.

No, they're not soap nuts, they're plastic ball things that don't use detergent at all .

You might as well put some stones in your machine. They work, but just through agitation. I'm sure you could find something cheaper.

i dont think stones produce oxygen bubbles tho? do they?

They are okay. We use ours for things like sheets, towels, etc. But I tend to use detergent for clothes because we seem to be able to stain most of our clothes on a daily basis! It is good though financially and environmentally. Must discipline myself to use them more...

Thanks, folk, I may give them a go. But it sounds like putting the washing machine on before I go to bed is not such a good idea.

i thought you had to put them in the tumble drier or am i thinking of something else??

NannyL · 21/01/2007 11:28

wurly wurly you are thinking of tumble dryer balls!

RedC · 21/01/2007 20:51

If you means these laundry balls I've been using them for a couple of years now and can't see myself going back to detergent. I didn't think they'd work when I first got them, but was getting a terrible rash from detergent so gave them a try.

They make clothes smell clean rather than perfumed and I've found they work as well as most detergents.
