Start on the worst room first. You will see the difference more easily and
it will give you more confidence to continue. Remember to have a duster
etc handy as there may some cleaning to do
I put it into 3 black bags , one for the tip etc one for charity one to sell
I spend 3-4 weekends doing it per annum

How? Kondo method. Only way to do it once and have it stay done in my experience!

I second the kondo method, half of the book sounded crackers to me...but after years spent rearranging pile of 'stuff' just so that it would fit in the house I needed a change.

It turned the house upside down for a couple of weeks but the results were amazing. De-cluttering by category rather than by room allows you to see just how much you own of an item compared to how much you actually need.

If you get a 10 minutes pocket of time, for instance whenever sthg is being cooked in the oven, when waiting for someone to turn up, just before collecting the children from school etc get a bin bag and go around the house picking up things you don't want or need, aim to dispose of certain number, 21 o 30 things, and when you finish put it in the grey bin or if to be donated in the car ready to take it to a charity shop. The trick is to do it fast, so not time to think too much and within a time frame, 10 minutes. It does really make a big difference

Thankyou for all the advice , I think it will be a slow process but I will keep plodding on - that book sounds good will have a look - that's def what I do - rearrange piles of stuff !
