Welcome all - and thanks to CotswoldStrife for leading us through May. It's going to be a momentous month on the political front, but this is where we can concentrate on the domestic front instead.

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chat along the way.

Link to the Flylady website Flylady

Don't let the somewhat sickly and barftastic language of the site put you off: the underlying system is sound!

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework; which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead!

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again!

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with masses of bumph. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

** And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight - it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the babysteps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names!) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders!

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings Launch Pad

Oh and don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t! . Some of us have been on here for years and some of us natter rather a lot – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers are very, very welcome!

Fhs Blue that is ridiculous! I don't blame your dh for being cross. Honestly, the stories one hears about rehoming centres nowadays ... . I know they have to be thorough about where they place an animal, but the pendulum (imho) has swung too far the other way .. as if the cat (or dog) will be happier in a cage in a rescue centre than in a family home ... with all the love in that home being focused on it as an individual ...instead of being one of many and competing for attention ... as long as the basic standards are ok... and people have the financial means for veterinary care etc. It's madness! No wonder rescue centres are bulging at the seams currently! Hope it goes well anyway!

Good news that your first class has been scheduled Cag!

Hope you got through the chores ok MadSprocker

I have done the basics such as wash uniform, gym kit, ballet kit, and whites wash but I am on strike now. Everyone a bit 'tense' here this weekend. Dh jittery about a potential Brexit. DD nervous about exams. It's all a bit "tinder box" atm. I was thinking of ringing a friend and escaping for a bit this evening but dh wants me to watch the football with him unfortunately and has put a lot of preparation in to it apparently he has bought crisps and beer Confused Smile

BlueEyeshadow · 11/06/2016 18:05

Thanks SC. Well, we passed, so the next step is to arrange a timetable for meeting the mog, getting the paraphernalia and bringing him home...

Hope your football evening is a success.

FoolandFitz · 11/06/2016 19:48

Thanks everyone. DS is being his usual bouncy self today - I always get surprised how quickly they recover so that day 1 they have raging fever and sickness but by day 3 they are back to normal as if nothing happened.

I'm still trying to work out who is who on this thread and getting mixed up - you know when you meet a whole bunch of people at the same time and get confused about names and who has told me which story.

I've had the following ta-das over the past couple of days:
cleaned out my handbag
unpacked the rest of the stuff in my suitcase from when I had gone away for a few days over half term Blush and put suitcase away
cleaned bathroom
tackled all the messy paper on the kitchen worktop - filed 3 pieces of paper, rest (loads of it) were shredded or recycled!
put 2 loads of laundry away
sorted under sink cupboard

Cagliostro · 11/06/2016 20:22

Hurrah for potential cat adoption! Sounds very frustrating, I hate it when people make appointments and don't keep them. I mean if we turned up hours late at the doctor's, we'd be (rightly) turned away with a flea in our ear, no? And yet it seems to happen in reverse a lot.

I've achieved bugger all today really, toothache really distracting. :( I've been reading a (not at all well written TBH - the underlying idea is sound though, if somewhat pilfered from other proper writers such as Kondo) book about organisation, clutter etc and I'm going to use a fresh notebook to scribble some ideas in later. I might have the football on in the background actually.

DH has gone to watch the football with his DS, the campaigning thing went pretty well in town (DD did get bored but coped well!) apart from being called a scumbag by a passer by Confused. Thankfully DD was in a shop at that point so didn't hear it (she is enjoying a little independence going into shops on her own).

BlueEyeshadow · 11/06/2016 22:44

As a result of the kitten inspection, the place is spotless - long may this last. The plan is to bring him home next Sat - picture here . DH objects to the Joe, so he will probably end up being Smokey. :)

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 12/06/2016 00:17

Sod the cats I want an alpaca!

Stilllivinginazoo · 12/06/2016 05:46

Slingcrump · 12/06/2016 12:00

Morning all.

Arrgghhh - utterly hideous argument here this morning - dd's behaviour is just awful. I am so sick of the eye rolling, defiance, rudeness, shouting, melt-downs when she is asked to do the slightest thing [sigh]. She is under pressure with exams and her toe (ballet) injury hurts, but I wouldn't have dared speak to my parents the way she speaks to dh and me sometimes. Normally I can get her to do things with a bit of humour and jogging along but when she explodes ... everyone needs to stand back!!

I asked her to put some of dh's shirts in the wm this morning (I'd scrubbed all the collars and cuffs, put vinegar on underarms, I wasn't even asking her to put in detergent or switch the ruddy thing on, just asked her to do the bending bit because of my back). But apparently she "hates me" which I know she doesn't mean, but it's hard not to feel hurt. We've made up now and all is ok (we have the same personality which means we can be shouting at one another and then making up 3 mins later) but urrgghh I crave a bit of calmness atm.

Dh and I have a much closer relationship with dd then I did with my parents. But I guess with that closeness you lose an element of respect or something? I honestly don't know any more!

Anyway, instead of smashing a plate, eating a very large cream cake, or drinking half a bottle of wine, I came on here to whinge instead Grin so thanks for putting up with me as usual.

Hope everyone else is doing better than me this morning!!

Ahhh Blue Smokey Joe looks utterly gorgeous!! I'm not really a cat person, but looking at that picture, I think I could be tempted! Love his colouring!! Poor him being singed though Sad It's so great that you are taking him in after his awful start in life!

Stlllivinginazoo think I need to get my dd to do some volunteering - community cafe sounds great! And arf Grin at the piglets!! Sorry to hear your dd2 had such a tough time at the shops though; I can really sympathise.

I'll go halves on the alpaca Einstein but we might have to invest in more than on!! Apparently, they have one of the strongest herd instincts of all mammals and waste away (refuse to eat) if kept alone Sad. I could do the husbandry and you could do the spinning and knitting Grin

Cag glad to hear your dh's campaigning went well but sorry to hear about your toothache - which can be miserable [proffers oil of cloves]

Foolandfitz glad to hear your ds is back to his bouncy self and looks like you have made great Flying progress! Don't worry about getting us all mixed up - it is confusing at the beginning - it's such a long running thread and there are quite a few of us Smile It's always good to have new blood though!

Right, I am required for revision testing. [Takes deep breath and smiles...]

Slingcrump · 12/06/2016 12:03

Einstein that should have read, more than 'one'!!

Big waves to everyone I have missed!

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 12/06/2016 12:28

Oh at least 4 alpacas. They can keep the sheep happy.... Grin

Stilllivinginazoo · 12/06/2016 14:12

I have sent dd2 bed before I strangle the attitude out of her.grrrrrr
I swear tweenies(preteens)weren't as bad in my day
Mycparents would've had my giblets I talk them way she rants at me..

Slingcrump · 12/06/2016 14:25

YY at the giblets Grin I just wouldn't have dared ... .

Things slightly better now as I think dd realised she had gone too far this morning and offered to make, serve and clear up lunch, which was delicious. So peace has descended until the next meltdown. I know it's partly my own fault. I don't always model being cool and calm and collected Blush

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 12/06/2016 14:27

I have two things to say 'post holiday laundry', 'post holiday car cleaning'
but i don't wanna!

Slingcrump · 12/06/2016 14:35

FoolandFitz · 12/06/2016 15:40

Aw@lil' SmokeyJoe and aw@alpacas. DS has a cuddly alpaca who can be a bit mischievous (tbf all his cuddlies have a mischievous streak Hmm - his ringtail lemur had to be hidden for always trying to kick Daddy)

DDs seem to be in a bad mood today sling and zoo, hope all is now calm and stays calm Smile

Ta Da today:

Wash on and drying
Hoovered downstairs
Bin cleaned
Bedding changed on our bed
Extra duvet and pillows was going to be recycled but DS has decided to build a den with it

Cagliostro · 12/06/2016 16:02

Now I'm kitten-broody! Envy He's gorgeous! Star

Right, I think the towel wash is done so that can go in the dryer. Then I'm going to potter around trying to tidy up the odd hot spot etc.

Feel like I'm walking on eggshells with DD today Hmm she's playing out though and DS and I are having nice PEACEFUL game time.

I've planned my class for tomorrow. Holy moly I am terrified actually. But excited. But terrified. :o

MadSprocker · 12/06/2016 19:59
