Anyone else outraged by the handling of Hotpoint/Whirlpool dryer fire safety concerns?

So this is following the Whirlpool announcement, Nov 2015, that engineer visits would be arranged to fix the fire risk in some of their models of tumble dryer.

We have one of the models affected, so registered for an engineer in November and in Jan 2016 rec'd an email with an estimated engineer visit date of June 2016. A further email today has given an eta of May 2017.

Both emails very cheekily offered me the 'chance' to buy a new machine from them at a special price.

I think a further 11 month delay is unreasonable.

Anyone else had this nonsense?

And, does anyone know how this works with the Consumer Rights Act 2015? Can I return this faulty machine?

Please and thank you very much
Vic

My mum was due a visit in March and as he engineer didn't show she complained nd received a new dryer free of charge.

our old tumble dryer was in perfect working order but was one of the machines that went on fire,so we took up your offer to replace with a new machine for £59,this was our first mistake ,the new dryer arrived on the 25th June 2016 .It has been used just 4 times then it stopped drying -no heat- we phoned Hptpoint and it was arranged for a enginner to call he called yesterday but he said because the machine was so new that they dont like him touching them he made a phone call to someone at hotpoint and it was stated that they were going to replace the dryer like for like or with an other model.and I was to phone in the afternoon to sort out.Since then I have phoned and phoned only to be passed from pillar to post been told time after time that somone wil phone me back -it never happens!!!!!!

ihatethecold · 29/07/2016 16:30

Following. I'm still waiting for a visit.
I'm not sure I still have the email and there's no way I'm going through a call centre to be fobbed off.

We have had a bloody nightmare!

We had our kitchen remodelled the previous year with all silver appliances. The replacements were in white so we was really happy when a firm called to say they were contracted to fix the machine and could they come out that week! We are meticulous about keeping the machine clean and it was only a year old so worked perfectly.

The machine has never worked properly since the day he came! I have no idea what he has done but the clothes do not dry properly at all. I have contacted whirlpool who will not accept liability as it is fixed! I had a warranty on the machine prior to this but retailers are referring me back to whirlpool as the machine has now been modified! Going round in circles and now have a new one in order.

The £20 replacement does exist. A friend of mine helped his parents get one. They had to take the old one to the store but they exchanged it for a brand new one for £19.99

There was a story in the paper that we don't name yesterday about a house being totally destroyed by fire after a tumble dtier went on fire. Didn't specify the make but the family were all at home and the house was still completely destroyed

I've been ringing, complaining, emailing, complaining, I've been nice and I've ranted and finally I bought a new tumble dryer.

A refund is now the bone to my inner terrier.
I shall not rest until I get my £200 back.

I had exactly the same long delay, missed calls, got nowhere with emails. Then I went onto the Hotpoint website, clicked on live chat, asked directly and got a date there and then!

user12785 · 03/09/2016 17:12

I got a new one free of charge by going on Hotpoint's Facebook constantly. I got a statement from our local fire brigade saying I shouldn't be using it AT ALL, even if I stood and watched it (Hotpoint's advice...) and kept plastering that on their Facebook until they got fed up with me. Mine was only a few weeks old when the recall came out.

I have BOTH their condenser drier AND the fridge that seems to have caused the Grenfell fire and the Shepherds Bush fire in 2016. Followed advise on MN I emailed CEO and a few others, got email back from his office telling me they could 'offer me' replacement drier for £99 so I wrote back saying it's disgusting, after all, I have already agreed a price, paid it, and now am being told not to use product I have paid for! Have emailed my MP asking her to support MP Andy Slaughters request to recall All those fridge-freezers, esp given that HP claiming the number in households currently is low...if that is the case they should be able to recall and replace/refund. While I can switch off drier and not use it etc, not so easy with fridge freezer with children etc. Cannot afford to just throw it out without replacement. Feel VERY angry with HP for not doing the right thing. Any one know who else I could contact? Feel like a sitting duck as have registered my details with HP and basically been told to now wait until they can offer further advise on the FF...

wowfudge · 28/06/2017 10:38

Push for the modification to the tumble dryer to be made asap. They are offering a low price replacement because it's easier and quicker than getting round to all the affected models. As I understand it - we had one of the affected models - the problem with the TDs comes from failing to empty the lint trap as per the manual instructions.

As for the fridge freezer - what is the info on the fault with that? It might not be a product recall matter at all.

OmJoey · 28/06/2017 12:07

Hi wowfudge,
I called them today and there is a product notice for the FF so far which means they will carry out checks on it once the Met Police have confirmed the Grenfell fire was caused by their FF. Until then we have to sit and wait. The point was made in the papers today that if it is as HP claiming that the number of FF affected are low in numbers, a recall and replace shouldn't be too much for them to do. I've written to MP to put pressure though not sure it will work. I've read that the modifications arnt necessarily safe and there is no independent verification - only HP's word. So it's been recommended to push for a replacement rather than modification. Am thinking what my consumer rights are...

ToothFairiesHaveNoChange · 28/06/2017 13:59

I've had my dryer fixed and all new parts put in for free as it was so old. Basically I've got a new dryer in the old casing.
I've not checked the FF yet. Is the model on their website?

OmJoey · 28/06/2017 14:14

It's the FF 175BP which is white and the equal agent in the silver-(sorry not sure if that model no)

ToothFairiesHaveNoChange · 28/06/2017 14:20

Thank you. Not my model.

SenseiWoo · 28/06/2017 14:25

Check out Andy Slaughter MP. He is the MP for Hammersmith and Fulham and has been campaigning for more action on this from the manufacturer since one of the faulty dryers caused the W12 tower fire in his constituency. And you could also write to your own MP asking him/her to lend support as well.

Whirlpool should be replacing all faulty dryers now, not dragging their feet until the owners die of old age.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 28/06/2017 14:28

I am still currently arguing with them as I really don't want a "fix". I've lived with something that could have burnt down my home and family, that I spent good money on. I don't see why I shouldn't get a replacement and don't understand why I should pay for it.

OmJoey · 28/06/2017 16:50

Same situation here- I've emailed my MP and copied Andy Slaughter- no success with Hotpoint but I'm not giving in
