Cat piss!

We just took out some old linoleum from our kitchen and just in the corner where I'm always saying to people "can you smell anything here? I'm sure it smells of piss" the floorboards absolutely reek. The only thing I can think of is that the woman who used to live here 6 years ago had a cat and that must have been where the litter tray was.

The horrible truth is that it seems to have completely soaked in to the floorboards. Any ideas on how to get the smell out? I've put a thick layer of bicarbonate of soda down (seems to have a marginal effect) and was contemplating adding vinegar.

I'll be eternally grateful to whoever can help me get rid of it.

dont know bout floorboards but we were told biological washing powder on carpet as breaks down enyzemes?

loler · 15/01/2007 14:30

we got some really good stuff from the pet shop - if you reallt drench the floor boards in it should work.

fortyplus · 15/01/2007 14:32

I have a cat that peed indoors when we had builders her who bought an aggressive little dog with them.
Dettox did the trick - but presumably you'd have to let that soak in, too. If that doesn't work then you can buy 2nd hand sanded antique floorboards - might be preferable to get rid of it completely as that corner will always seem dirty to you.

Bensonbluebird · 15/01/2007 14:35

Will try dettox first as I've got some and will let you all know how it goes...

Well, the floor now smells of disinfectant with a delicate undernote of piss...

Will have another go. Loler, can you remember what the stuff you used was called?

Ah, well - you should've used the Dettox first! You can buy stuff at pet stores called 'Whoops' pet stain & odour remover. Never tried it, though - the Dettox worked ok.

geekgrrl · 15/01/2007 14:58

you need an enzyme-based cleaner from the pet shop for this - it will break down the cat piss and hopefully get rid of the odour.
(also works fabulously on children's bedding!)

I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news but a friend of mine moved into a flat with the same problem and they tried everything without success! I hope you have better luck.

Bensonbluebird · 15/01/2007 15:07

We are planning to put down new flooring so my plan is to get rid of as much of the smell as possible then seal the boards with polyurethane varnish before the new flooring goes down. I really don't want to have my lovely new kitchen finished but with a faint wiff about it and know exactly what it is!

Will try 'Whoops'next.

Expensive perfume works a treat.

fortyplus · 15/01/2007 15:13

If you're putting new flooring on top of the floorboards I'd be inclined to take the dodgy board out and replace it with chipboard.
Then you know it won't smell.

Bensonbluebird · 15/01/2007 15:21

Gonna buy me some then Daddog?

We got the stuff from the vets too and it's absolutely brilliant. We had terrible trouble with a stray coming in and spraying, repeatedly. It is expensive, but is the ONLY thing that works in my experience.

It's made by "Animalcare - Pet Healthcare" and is called "Odour Eliminator". Basically it's a chemical;/biological thing that neturalises the the smell through some kind of ph type thing (know nothing about the sciences sorry). HTH.

DimpledThighs · 16/01/2007 09:52

good luck - you have my sympathy. I think either the expensive stuff or some biological washing powder first to save you some money as that may work.

One consolation thought - before you took the lino up you had no idea baout the smell so when the new floor goes on that should block it too.

Best wishes!
