My dd2 threw up on the settee last night - i've tried disinfectant, its a woven gabric type settee - anyone got any ideas how i can get rid of the smell - i've plugged a plug in air freshener thing next to it overnight and it still stinks! thanks x

Vanish spray on stain remover seems to work when the dog pees on the carpet, but I've never tried it on the furniture. It would probably be a good idea to try it on a hidden bit of the sofa first in case it stains/bleaches the fabric.

crystalpony · 15/01/2007 09:59

I think foam fabric cleaner is probably quite good for this as it lifts the stain and the smell with it.

Gloworm · 15/01/2007 10:01

sprinkle on loads of neat tea tree oil as well, it never fails

bambi06 · 15/01/2007 10:01

bicarbonate of soda/baking powder will absorb the smell.

Clean with a solution of viiiiiiiiiinegar and water. It really will work, guaranteed! Also, put a bowl of vinegar and water in the room and any residual smell will be absorbed too. Try it!

ClosetSlob · 15/01/2007 11:22

bicarb of soda.

stleger · 15/01/2007 11:26

1 part vinegar to 4 parts water does for cat sick, and it is the worst.

JanH · 15/01/2007 11:38

BICARBBICARBBICARB!

Make paste with cold water, rub in, leave to dry, brush/hoove out. Magic. Leaves no smell at all!

Hattiecat · 15/01/2007 12:15

Oh I'm sorry it didn't work, Hc - you must have special bicarb resistant-upholstery!

Have you actually removed the bicarb yet and have a sniff of the bits underneath? And do they stillsmell?

Only there could be bits you missed, especially with tissue-dabbing DH spreading it around - and he probably rubbed it in too, oh yummy. (My DH has been known to strip a pukey bed, dump the whole lot straight in the washer, and then look surprised when it came out still full of bits.)

Hattiecat · 16/01/2007 13:54

JanH - i actually think you've hit nail on head...i think dh really smeared it into the settee which has made it far worse than it might have been...i've left the bicarb on for now, partly because i'm still hoping it might work, partly because i can't be a**ed cleaning it off (well actually its completely the latter!).

the smell is still pungent if i sit on the settee or on the floor next to the settee, so its been a kind of bum numbing sort of morning on the floor, with occasional whiffs of stale vomit - but the good news is that i suffered it long enough to watch ER, despite my nose spending a reasonable amount of time stuck down top!!!!
