I had a bagless Hoover cylinder cleaner which fitted under the bed ( the space under the bed is 35cm). It blew up spectacularly and I need to replace it. It's all carpet upstairs. Looking at what Argos has to offer there seems to be no difference in carpet picking up rate (they mostly come out at D) however expensive they are. Does anyone have any personal recommendations?

If you have a mixture of carpet and hard floors, have a look at the Miele C3 cat & dog. Pricey but worth it. They're very reliable. It comes with 2 different heads - a suction only head for hard floors and a turbo brush for carpets. Easy to store too, all the tools clip inside the body.
I wouldn't bother looking at the rating labels, they make no sense. 2 identical vacuums apart from 1 has a pet odor filter got completely different ratings for pick up. Total nonsense.

Miele c2 was cheaper than c3 and we didn't get the cat and dog one as we dont have them!

Cat and dog versions seem to have charcoal or something for odors.

C3 has a display whereas c2 is a dial Hut works as well.

We've been researching and c2 was ok for us (carpets and floors) whereas c1 was just floors I think.

Weve had it a week and can't believe how much better than the Dyson it is!!

If you've got all carpets, an upright would probably be better. They tend to be better on carpets than cylinders. We've got a Sebo X1 that's 20+ years old and its fantastic. We tried to "upgrade" to a Dyson a few years ago but the Dyson was crap so we sold it on eBay and kept going with the Sebo. The newer ones are a bit more powerful than ours and have more tools but the basic design is pretty much the same.

I can't store an upright upstairs, it needs to go under the bed and be less than 35 cm high. As it is a second vacuum cleaner it does not have to be that powerful, but there is probably more to vac upstairs than downstairs as the kitchen is all hard floor which I don't vac, just sweep and mop.

I don't like uprights either!

The c2 also has a "compact c2" which is smaller! I imagine you may need to change bags more often.

This would be good as a second hoover. There's "better" models in the c2 range but the suctions ace and it's small...

Google Debenham c2 celebration miele compact. About 115 quid!

Sorry, but they are both (the junior and the compact) too high (38 and 39 cm). Also I wold prefer a bagless cleaner. I'm totally fussy, I realsie that.
