very messy job perhaps just chip off the loose bits and big gest jaggy bits (if that kind), then skim with something like this , ronseal probably do a version too.

IME (and I've had plenty!) the best way is to leave the Artex where it is, and get a plasterer in to cover it up. Honestly.

Agree with Skribble, by far the easiest way to deal with this is to plaster over it. And I would get a professional to do it unless you have plastering experience.

Plastering is very skilled work and hard to get a smooth finish but a professional would do a job like this in half a day. If you try to scrape that artex off you'll be there aching and cursing for days.

I think you should get it done professionally - it's not good to inhale the dust, as far as I know.

yes, older artex has asbestos in it. newer (i think it is pre/post 80s) can be got off but having done it we still had to replaster, it does not come off neatly.

I removed it once - before I knew it might have contained asbestos. I used nitromors (sp?0 which burns if it drops onto your skin. I wouldn't risk it if I were you. To be honest, it pulled down most of the lath and plaster ceiling anyway so the whole thing needed doing by a plasterer. If you want to save money and if either you of dh are handy in the diy line, you could put up the plasterboard yourself over the artex, and then ask a plasterer to come and skim. BUT plasterboarding a ceiling is heavy strenuous work and will involve at least 3 people really...depends if you've got strong hefty and very good friends.
