"Jessajam! Where's the drill charger/sander/small phillips screwdriver?" PLEASE help me sort out the tool cupboard...

...before I insert aforementioned small phillips screwdrivers into DHs left eye!!!

Don't suggest I get him to do it..it won't happen...

Large cupboard under the stairs. Currently has 3 wide shelves and crammed full of saws, drills, hammers, wire, screws, sandpaper, wallpaper removers, battery chargers, extension cables and fourplugs...

Have seen lots of 'solutions' but suspect half of them don't actually work!

any suggestions?

toolbox?
the B&Q Value ones aren't bad

if you've got a whole cupboard to play with I'd suggest using plastic crates - one for extension cables, one for wire, one for woodworking tools, one for each drill+all its bits+charger, one for chemicals etc etc

screw eyes screwed into edge of shelf can be handy for keeping frequently-used screwdrivers in hanging point-down (we do this in the garage for the ones you always need to adjust saddle, light brackets etc before going out on the bike)

I think crates better than box...box ends up being a jumble of stuff, plus in order to put stuff away you have to;
1 - get the box out
2 - open the box lid
3 - put item in appropriate place
4 - close lid
5 - put box back

suspect this is at least 3 steps too many

will need to put in new shelves I think, old ones distinctly 'curvy' in middle...

just stick extra bracket under saggy bit?

don't forget to label the crates else you end up saying 'the red one, no the other, red one, no the red one on the top shelf'

Get a toolbox and fill it with the bits you may need quickly eg - various sizes of phillips and flat screwdrivers, a set of allankeys, a small and large adjustable spanner and a claw hammer. Get a fishing tackle style organiser for screws etc. Put everything else into crates and stick it in the garage. If there are power tools, make sure they're with the correct chargers/power supplies.

My dh has a tool supply comparable to Hewden tool hire. At last count we had:-
4 sanders
3 cordless 12v drill
1 cordless 18v drill
2 routers
2 cordless screw drivers
1 dremmel
1 explosive nail gun
1 compressor driven nail gun
2 petrol chainsaws
1 sthil saw
1 circular saw
1 metal chop saw
1 set metal nibblers

2 full sized mechanic toolboxes.

The joys of a hubby who works for a builders merchant. None of our friends buy tools, they just come to ours.

Dh has all of his tools hanging from pegs on the walls. Everything to view at a glance. Then little things like nails, rawl plugs etc are in see-thru boxes which are also labled.

So that is the shed and garage ship shape and Bristol fashion. If only the house matched!

Thanks everyone! I can see a mammouth crate buying session on the horizon!

If memory serves, there are a couple of random old brackets forming part of the clutter within the cupboard...maybe I'll put them to good use!

gscrym, your DH sounds exactly like mine. people call our house Dan's Tool Hire as all our friends just borrow his tools rather than buy them themselves.

it drives me absolutely nuts, especially as he never puts any of them away.

i have lost count of the number of times I have sorted out the tool cupboard only for it to be a complete shambles a couple of weeks later.

I can't complain really as he is really good at DIY and has saved us loads of money.

Lorina, I wish my DH was as neat as yours!!
