How to clean a sheepskin?

Hi all,

My lovely DM recently gave me a sheepskin for my 4mo DD and she loves it! She sleeps on it and lies on it to play - consequently there's a now a fair bit of spit up and drool on it.

Now I've found that my sneaky little longhaired dachshund and got into her nursery and had a lovely nap on it - so it's also covered in black dog hair and mud from his paws.

I've had a look online at how to clean them - is there a good alternative to dry cleaning?

We have some lambskin rugs and the instructions just said to put them in the washing machine.

I have done that, (on the wool cycle )but it does not get all the fluffy stuff out. At least it is clean fluff. I would give them a vigorous shake outside first.

Can you pin it on the washing line and give it a good beating? Wool has mystical self cleaning properties and often the dirt just brushes off.

They come up well being brushed with a dog mat brush.

I just had to clean one, so I sprinkled bicarbonate of soda all over, and left it for a day or so. Then I hung it on the washing line and beat it for ages, til all the bicarb was gone. A quick brush and it's like new.

i have a few and wash them in the machine on the wool cycle with wool wash.

I do have to brush/comb one of them after which is a PITA. You can get a special comb for this task.

Try hoovering it first on a gentle setting to get rid of the gunk if it is short haired, otherwise shake vigorously outside.

I killed my first one by death by hot wash. The second o put on a wool wash and it still shrank a bit :-(

I pit mine in the washing machine, too. They go crinkly and matted so I brush them with a small Denman which is hard going but brings them up like new.
