Roomba - thinking of buying - who has one and are they good?

Title says it all really. Been thinking of one for a while but they are fairly expensive. I have a Dyson Animal and just find it too heavy to use all the time.

Really fancy robotic so that I can do other cleaning while it's vaccuming.

Who has one and what is it like! Would you recommend/buy again...

TIA

Ooo haven't got one, but I'd love one!

Although not being able to do the stairs would annoy me, as it's the stairs I particularly hate hoovering

I'd like the hard floor equivalent (Scoomba? Was called something like that) though for the kitchen floor. Just stick the chairs up, set the robot going and close the door - come back to a nice clean kitchen floor a little while later - perfect!

Someone on Mumsnet has got one, Papillon I think.
Someone told me that Dyson is developing a prototype for the English market, app was on TV recently.
If this is the case I am so getting one

Thanks - am sure there were a few people on here who have them?

Yes have heard of the scoomba (?) - looks fab (a lot more money!) but I really think more value if you have a lot of hard floors - we have mostly carpet apart from kitchen/bathroom etc as you said.

I am a bit dubious about it being a bit 'gimmicky' and not up to withstanding normal vacumming stuff(I have long - always moulting hair and also a hairy cat!). I read somewhere that you really have to keep it tangle free otherwise you run into probs. I've had a Dyson for at least 6 years and have never had to detangle and it still vacuums brilliantly. I'm not that good at 'maintenance' so not sure it will last long with me. Had a carpet sweeper thingy for crumbs (recharge batt operated) and it's dead (or almost - and not v old) as it's never been detangled....

We've got one - fab for just leaving it going while you go out, and coming back to find the vacuuming done. Ours does the wooden floors, and the kitchen floor tiles as well as the carpeted bits. Only downside is that you do have to keep the floors relatively clear of clutter, and remember to shut the door of the room you want it to do so it doesn't wander all over the house, leaving you to search for it when you get back!

Wow that's good value - would cost a lot to ship from the US though so by the time you factored cost into it and also potential customs duty it wouldn't be worth it Why oh why do we always get so ripped off in the UK for consumer goods - you practically pay the same in UK£ as you do in $US!!!!!

Me me. I've to the Roomba Discovery, bought direct from IRobot, but we're in the States and it was a refurbished one. It's superb, picks up dog hairs and goes over carpet and wooden floor without any problems. I have it upstairs now, so Frobby as we've called him, trundles around doing my bedrooms. If only I could train it to dust too and crawl up and down stairs. They are well worth it really are.

Oops see, so excited that I had to post twice, sorry

LunarSea · 03/01/2007 08:25

DarrellRivers - I think ours is the Discovery too. ds bought it last summer from someone dealing in them on Ebay - was about £120 then.

Yes we're nearish to the Nuffield (or rather down by Old Milverton, but the Nuffield is enough of a landmark to use for directions).

Papillon · 03/01/2007 10:04

I have a roomba - we have the original version and its on its last legs. The kids played too much with it!

But it is really great, especially if you look out for one on sale. The newer versions have a docking system which is better for charging up the battery.

Would totally recommend getting one, I want a new one. We have alot of wooden flooring so its really a great cleaning timesaver.

DarrellRivers · 03/01/2007 10:06

Oh the ebay tip is useful , will go and have a look now, thanks
