does anyone know how to make your own curtains? and how much fabric you need roughly? i've managed to borrow my nans machine, and as our windows are odd shapes i've gathered enough fabric now (I think! lol)

ummm.... 2 times the width of the window, + an allowance for the hems. Im sure if you googles it, you'd get step by step guides... my mum can make them, so, anyone can!

Yep, guess so. And a bigger one at the bottom I think. If you make them too long, you can always shorten.

some instructions here

Very easy to make. The only difficult bit is getting the pattern to match on the drops. I would suggest pressing the hems first.

You can do 1.5 to 2 widths depending on how full you want the curtains. Join together and press the seam so the excess material lies as flat as possible. Then hem the sides if you're not having lining and sew in the rufflette at the top allowing at least an inch for the top hem. Hang from curtains and turn up to the desired length and then hem the bottom edge last.

If you're lining them, it's a bit more complicated. I join the two lengths of lining and press the seam so it's flat. Then sew to one side of the curtain, lay out on the floor and pin rufflette in place, making sure that the top edge of the lining is caught by the lower pin of the rufflette. Make sure the curtain and lining are absolutely flat when you're doing this. I then sew the rufflette in place and handstich the other side edge of the lining to the curtain, making sure not to catch the material at the front of the curtain. Then hang and hem the bottom edge as before.

I don't know if there is a better way of making curtains, but this works well for me. You just need to be careful about laying it out to avoid the lining being out of kilter with the curtains...

HTH and good luck!!
