Are my mouldy curtain liners doomed? Any tips on mould removal?

We get condensation and it makes the curtain linings a bit damp, leading to mould. It's in vertical stripes, just on the each fold nearest the window. The linings aren't removable. Are my curtains doomed to look grim, or has anyone got a good method of mould removal?

Do you think you can soak curtains in Milton or will it bleach them.

JapanNextYear · 14/01/2016 10:19

I've bought some mould cleaner specifically for curtains to spray on. Hasn't arrived yet...Also got a humidifier that's been running for the last week and has to be emptied night and morning.

Karcher window vac to suck up condensation in the morning (really good).

Simon- I wouldn't soak actual curtains, theres bound to be bleaching and/or shrinkage.
Mine were removable blackout type linings.

WARNING: Not for the faint hearted!

I once had a white summer dress that had been worn at a hot (!) Glastonbury when I was sweating and running about. It got thrown in a bin bag for a month and forgotten about.
When I found it, the black spot mould had set in well.

I treated it with a mixture of Vanish and urine (organically sourced) made into a paste. The ammonia in the urine acts as a mild bleach and deactivates the bacteria. I left the paste on for a few hours then gave it a hot wash in the machine, but it could also be done over the edge of the bath if you can't wash the rest of the curtains.

Dear reader, it worked. Dress good as new and back in action at tea dances and garden parties with ne'er a whiff of its chequered past.

Bleach kills mould. Washing powders (bio & non bio, not colour protect) all contain oxy bleach.

Try soaking in warm water with washing powder for a few hours before washing on a delicate wash in the machine with some more powder.

rabbit123 · 14/01/2016 11:32

Oh, forgot to mention, the bleach in washing powder is not enough to strip the colour of the curtains after 1 wash but enough to kill the mould.

Vanish powder also has oxy bleach in it.

Pear Shock I've just sat down with a Brew & Cake

Was going suggest the Detol spray but it does bleach if left on. I ruined a dress because I forgot it had the mould remover spray on it.

What about a window vac to get the moisture off the windows -at least then you can tip it down the drain. Cheaper than a dehumidifier.

I'd also be tempted to cut the lining out of the curtain, and replace with another.

TannhauserGate · 14/01/2016 12:02

Well cutted- everyday is a school day on MN! Grin

imagine if it hadn't worked after all that.

sofiahelin1 · 14/01/2016 13:32

I've got a window vac & £200 dehumidifier still get mouldy curtains in one room Sad

jazzandh · 14/01/2016 13:37

I soaked an item that had been left in the shed and gone mouldy in a strong vanish solution. To begin with it did not come out.....so I left it in the bucket and almost forgot about it.....

The vanish lifted all the mould and actually didn't really seem to bleach the item too much either - so may be worth a soak in the bath....

What on earth is organically sourced wee?! Is my own wee not organic? Grin

CuttedUpPear · 14/01/2016 17:42

OliviaBenson it all depends on whether you have been grazing on organic veg or not.
KFC wee = not recommended for mould remover.

I think the window vacs are currently on offer in Halfords, they had a big display of them when I walked past yesterday.
