Loo bins - do you have them and what is the etiquette for visitors?

We had SIL to stay over Xmas. She is always a polite house guest and generally tries to fit in with what we do. This time though she kept on hinting that we needed a bin in our downstairs loo (which is tiny) - we don't need one in our opinion.
Anyway, as if to make her point, when I went to put my Quality Street wrappers in the kitchen bin on NYE, I had horror moment when right there in the bin, on top, partially covered with one thin tissue was a (heavily) used tampon (bin is in the cupboard next to the dish washer - so it gets warm and we never put perishable waste in it - but the cupboard actually smelt of the offending article!!). It could only be SILs and I did not mention it
Even if we got a bin in the loo, is it polite to put used sanitary protection in it - surely she should flush or wrap in tissue and quietly put in our wheely bin?
What do other households do for female guests?

Prime, if you want to wear washable sanpro and carry it around in your bag, bully for you. I don't. I don't think it is normal to put used sanpro in your handbag, but at least you have a special bag for it. I don't think women carry around sanpro disposal equipment with them so would have to put it in their handbag just wrapped in toilet roll. You think they should. I think you're unreasonable for expecting me to come prepared for every eventuality given that the vast majority of people don't have a silly vendetta against bathroom bins so I wouldn't expect to encounter such a situation. I suppose I could always put it in one of your multiple bedroom bins at your house though, given that you're not squeamish :)

Because there are lots of occasions when someone is in their bedroom and creates rubbish from something they have opened or used and would need to dispose of (tissues, cotton wool, broken coathangers, sweet wrappers, pens, clothing labels etc)

I have never felt the need to have a bin in my bedroom. Hankies are washed. Cotton wool only gets used in the bathroom (so I need a bathroom bin), I've never had a broken coathanger (what are you doing to it?) but if I did it would go in the recycling not the bin, don't eat sweets in the bedroom, don't use pens in the bedroom (and I'd rather carry a broken pen from a room that I'm using it in to the room where the recycling goes than blood-soaked sanpro from a room with a sink to one without), clothing labels are usually paper so get recycled. Hmm, maybe you should recycle more head tilt. I only need bins in rooms where there's waste that can't be recycled and that is the bathroom and the kitchen.

"No bathroom bin and you don't floss?"

We do have a bathroom bin, and I don't floss. Only DD uses the bin.

BertieBotts · 05/01/2016 19:44

You should floss, you know. I didn't start until recently and I'm amazed what a difference it makes. In other countries it's a standard thing, in fact I got told off by the dentist for not starting DS off, he was only 6 Confused I genuinely had no idea children COULD floss before!

There is literally no other way to clean between your teeth, so it's worth doing. Even those water pik things don't work apparently.

BertieBotts · 05/01/2016 19:46

You should probably provide a bedroom bin for guests if there is any chance they might be using condoms - not something you want to have to sneak into the kitchen bin either!

Bunbaker · 05/01/2016 19:58

I can't get the floss between my teeth. I have a small jaw and my mouth is overcrowded. I am meticulous about brushing and the dentist is happy with the way I look after my teeth.

GrinSmile

I used the bathroom bin 6 times today. My sons bedroom bins are full. The one kids room that doesnt have one has littery bits around. Yes, i need to tidy my house, thats beside the point Wink

Every time i used the bin i thought of this thread. Magic.

cleaty · 05/01/2016 20:47

Bunbaker, I am the same. The dentist said my mouth was in excellent shape.

Lweji · 05/01/2016 21:24

Same here. With me dentists would go bankrupt.
Although I helped one make quite a bit of money trying to straighten them up.

BackforGood · 05/01/2016 22:18

Bunbaker - that is joy to my ears to hear I'm not the only freak person who has a small jaw and overcrowded teeth and just no way of getting the floss between my teeth!

Basic manners to have somewhere for a woman to dispose of sanitary products. I also put a bin liner in. What else are they going to do with it? Carry it around in their pocket? Or announce to all and sundry that they need a bin?
