Do you not separate? Or do you just wait until you have a ful load of whites/darks/brights etc?

I'm drowning in laundry! Need to do something different!

demented I refused to do a daily wash just for DPs gym kit - and I refused to have it stinking in the house for a week. (Think I should be Blush here). He hand washes it at the gym (don't know how - think he takes it into the shower with him) and then spins in the costume spin drier thing. It is dry for the next day.... I told him if he had so much energy that he needed to burn some off in the gym then he had enough energy to sort his own gym clothes ....they do go in the once weekly wash too.
(DCs just make sure they have plenty of kit - so I can do a weekly wash...I find mud easier to get off if is dried and brushed off first but then again they aren't big sweaty teens)

unlucky, I have gym kit too so between the two of us we make up a lot of loads of washing

I seem to be doing a wash every day now. 2 adults and 1 toddler. I separate and then put the biggest pile on for a wash on that particular day. I don't put small loads to wash though, I wait until there's enough. A non washing day is a very happy day.

Whites - once 1-2 weeks
Light colours - at least once a week
Dark colours - at least once a week
Bedding - once a week
Towels - once a week

In summer I often do multiple loads a day so I can dry it outside on a good day, I prefer it that way. Can't do that in winter as not enough drying space.

Scattymum101 · 03/01/2016 11:23

I do a load every morning. I separate our washing as we put it away and do the same with dds'.
I usually have enough of something to do one every day.
Have to change it up now I'm going back to work this week though.

Copperspider · 03/01/2016 11:31

We have 3 washing baskets - whites, light coloureds and darks. Kids (4 of them) sort their washing into the baskets, and we can easily see when there's enough for a load. We probably do about 7 washes a week, but not one a day - some days 2 or 3 loads.

NattyGolfJerkin · 03/01/2016 11:38

I don't know how many loads i wash per week. I put the machine on when the laundry bin in full. I separate.

Whites
Wools/delicates
Darks
Coloureds/other/whatever is left

I wash everything apart from the delicates with a colour run sheet and dettol antibacterial in wash liquid (as well as bio powder). I never use fabric softener. Rarely do a wash above 40. My machine never smells because I leave the door open to dry & air the drum between uses.

I do 1-2 washes a day, there is 6 of us here. I separate into whites, colours and darks plus bedding. I just put in whatever pile is biggest!

SausageSmuggler · 03/01/2016 12:04

I do but use a fairly low temp so probably don't need to. I have darks, brights and lights.

I used to have an 'ambiguous' load too which was all the things that were a mix of light and dark/bright I.e white and red stripy top.

Bonkerz · 03/01/2016 13:18

No sorting here. All washing goes in on a 60 wash. Then it all goes in tumble dryer. Then it all goes in kids drawers.
Every day kids choose their clothes and I iron what they want to wear.

ThePortlyPinUp · 03/01/2016 13:22

I do a white/light load and a dark load every day and then every couple of days I have a bright load. Bedding is done weekly and takes three loads, usually on a Sunday.

Kim82 · 03/01/2016 13:31

Yep, I separate into darks, whites, red/pink/orange (we have loads of these colours), cold wash (which is Dh's expensive jeans & the kids' decent hoodies mainly), towels and bed covers. There are 6 of us though so there's always plenty washing to make a load a day, sometimes more.

I haven't done any washing for 3 days as I've been feeling lazy so have 3 loads to catch up on (darks, whites and pinks/reds) plus everybody's bed covers when I strip the beds in a bit which makes another 2 loads (3 girls' covers in one wash, ours and Ds' covers in another). I'll have an empty washing basket after that though. I'll probably leave washing the bed covers until tomorrow though and do the towels then too.

Indantherene · 03/01/2016 15:08

I am amazed that few others have separate colour washes..

I generally only do washing at the weekend. I'd got behind on the wet stuff and have only just caught up, so I've just put the first couple of loads on this morning.

Didn't have a white wash this week because no school shirts and socks, and no karate outfits. I've got a black load, a red load, a pink load, a blue load, a purple load, and a grey load. Did the towels yesterday.

Any time I've mixed colours in a load something comes out ruined. I do put the navy school stuff in with my black trousers but I wouldn't dream of putting red and navy together, or pink and blue. As it is the colours always fade badly and yellow Brownie stuff tends to go a nasty sort of greenish instead of bright yellow. How do you manage with general darks/lights/brights?

Goingtobeawesome · 03/01/2016 15:13

I do darks every day, light colours every 3 days, 60 degree wash several times a week. That is PE kit, school/work shirts, towels and bedding. I easily do over 15 washes a week.

Goingtobeawesome · 03/01/2016 15:19

Buying a second basket for the utility and then a crate for on the draining board has helped.

I have two regular laundry baskets. One on the landing where the dirty stuff goes. Brought down. Washer emptied into grey one if not tumble drier proof and the bigger white one if the clothes are.

Two tall baskets in the utility room - blue one for coloured, white one for whites/light colours. Crate on draining board is for tea towels, dish cloths, bedding, bath towels. Pick which one is full and wash.
