We have mice in our kitchen. What can we do?
Is this really bad?

Look for droppings around cracks/holes in floor, under cupboads etc to see where they are getting in. Ours were squeezing through a seemingly impossible 5mm gap around the radiator pipe and the floorboads.

We sealed off the holes, put out traps laden with peanut-butter and caught one each night for a couple of nights. Looking back, it was nothing compared to the rat infestation during the Summer. An extended family lived under the house and one of their number seemed to die on a regular basis - the smell and bluebottle infestation was so gross. Needless to say - we've since moved!

Good luck.

I suggest you also invest in/borrow a cat or put a tray of used cat litter down for a couple of days. The smell will drive the mice away.

I live in a row of victorian terraces. Every house has rodent problems except ours. The mice would have to have little rising sun kamakazi headbands to enter the house of 3 moggies

i've had them too, they come in during winter. have managed to get rid of them with rentokil mouse bait...and storing food in sealed containers. good luck

No it's not really bad. Although I would say that cos I have them at the moment! If you have an older house they are almost certainly going to pay a visit at some time or the other. Also, if you have building works going on anywhere near that will bring them out as well. You may not even know you have them until you spot one. There is another recent thread going about them at the moment with some very helpful advice on it. Good luck.

We had mice in kitchen last summer. We have mice that live in the roof, walls etc of the house, it's inevitable given the size, age & location but we hadn't had them in the living areas before.

So we bought one of the electronic devices that you plug in and it sends sonic beeps round the house. It has done the trick. I think even the cellar is clear! You can't have the sonic thing if you have pet hamsters etc though. Dogs & cats are OK with it.

dizzydo · 14/12/2006 11:19

I got one of those Fairytale but I think you need them plugged into every room as the dont do very well if there is furniture in the way which there usually is in a house! Hence the mice seem to have moved from the living room to the kitchen were there is no plug.

The sonic pulse should go around the electric wiring - so if the house is on a standard ring-main it should get ample coverage. If this isn't happening you could always move the unit around every couple of days, I'm sure that would be annoying enough for mice.

Do you get the sonic things at DIY stores?

I have seen a mouse today - and got myself in a right state - have played with the babies upstairs (dts 11 months) since I saw it.
The council are coming in the morning - but have no idea where they are getting in? Will pest control advice on that as well?

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhh!

elclose · 12/01/2007 15:45

we have had mice in our kitchen too on and off for about 3 years we have tried every sort of trap and caught a few but about 2 months ago we put down rat poison and not seen one since hurrayyy!!!

SoupDragon · 12/01/2007 15:53

If you can fit a pencil in a hole a mouse can get through it.

Get pest control in.

loopylopey · 14/01/2007 17:35

we've just moved house and on day 2 i saw a mouse in our kitchen, then we were woken up at 4am with a mouse scratching in the attic.
the bloody previous owners had guinea pigs running free in the house, and the food has gone through all the floorboards which explains our mouse infestation.... think we're going to have to get pest control in...
