Odd-sized interior doors

Anyone know where you can buy ready-made doors in sizes other than those at B&Q and Homebase?
Just measured our bathroom door and it's blimmin' huge (thought I'd found the perfect one in Homebase)
Or if you've had them made what sort of cost was it?

DP has used John Carr before - not sure how big a range of non-standard sizes they do but I know they do some.

Salvage yard?

BettySpaghetti · 10/12/2006 10:09

Just noticed they seem to have changed their name -I Googled John Carr and thats whats in the www. ?????

I'm afraid you will need to find a joiner/carpenter to do one, if yours could be repaired that may be the least expensive option.

Thanks, the JohnCarr/JeldWen ones aren't big enough (stupid door is 7' high FGS) but I looked on Ebay for salvagey ones and found these which could be made wide enough and would be perfect for my bizzarely-shaped bathroom. Getting on for £200 though and we'd still need to fix up a 4" trim over the top to fill the height gap.

Look on slavo for local salvage yards.

What sort of house do you have tht the bathroom door is 7' high and what have you done to the old one???

Stockingsofdinosaurs · 10/12/2006 14:26

Just an Edwardian semi! The door is on it's own little 45degree wall and has a glazed panel above it to the ceiling for natural light. The one we have must be the original but it's been so pissed about with (rubbish glazing in the top panels, handles and locks removed and filled, someone seems to have kicked big cracks in the lower panels) that I really don't think there's any authentic charm left in it. One with more (obscured) glazing that folded in half would be perfect.
Will deffo look in salvo yards while we save up though (ie could have years!)

It might be easier (and cheaper) to have the doorway resized to standard?

Skribble · 10/12/2006 22:52

Cheaper to find a local joiner and get them to make doors to size or add to standard doors.

MIL's are like that She can get doors the right width or doors the right height. She gets doors that are right width then FIL (joiner) adds a bit on the bottom in matching wood.

I think it may be to do with optical illusions because the landing is split level with little steps next to the door, plus its odd angle - perhaps a normal door would look like a door for hobbits.

We have odd sized internal doors too (Edwardian semi here too). The original doors had long gone before we moved in, when we replaced the ones that were there we got a carpenter to do it - he got the doors from a shop that specialise in selling doors but he did have to sand/plane them down a bit too when he was fitting them.
