how do you cook fish without stinking the house out?

I made fish pie last night and the house still stinks. I have a portion to eat tonight and don't really fancy it.

Close the kitchen door, turn on the extractor or open the kitchen window. Leave extractor on after you've finished cooking. Don't eat fish pie when sitting on the sofa (soft furnishings hang on to smells). I throw any fish or meat packaging away into the outside bin, I don't put them in the kitchen bin. Scented air freshener candles are pretty good at getting rid of cooking smells.

If I'm frying/poaching fish on the hob I put a saucer of white vinegar on the counter next to the cooker. Apparently it absorbs the smell. I do think it makes a difference, but I'm not sure whether it would help with fish dishes cooking in the oven.

If I'm cooking fish in the oven, I put a small bowl of water with lemon slices in it on the floor of the oven. I also close the kitchen door snd open the back door. That works quite well. I also throw leftovers straight into the foodwaste wheeliebin, not into the kitchen bin.

In the summer, i cook fish in foil parcels on the bbq. That wouldn't work for fish pie though!

yes to close kitchen door and opening windows/using extractors.

also, clean pans/dishes straight away and clean the kitchen surfaces.

I usually light a candle and put it by the stove while I'm cooking. Just poachingfish for fish pie makes such a smell....

Use a gas burner in the garden , also good for steak and bacon

I recently batch-cooked a lovely authentic curry sauce using loads of onions and garlic....and I mean loads. Usually it stinks the house out for three days but this time I put the slow cooker on with water and bicarbonate of soda in as bicarb absorbs the smell. It did indeed work!

My old fishmonger used to have a vacuum packing machine and he could vac pack it so you could boil in the bag to avoid smells . Very popular for kippers apparently.
I tend to bake in foil a lot.

I'm surprised that fish pie creates a problem with smells. I make it regularly and the potato topping and sauce etc seem to "cushion" any fishy smell. Plus I tend to use cod and prawns which aren't very pungent! (But my house is rather drafty it has to be said!)

The smell of oily fish that is fried ie sardines, mackerel and sometimes salmon, does tend to be quite strong I agree ... .

I remember dh cooking fresh sardines on the barbecue once on a hot summer day and a ball of pungent blue smoke hung over the bottom of the garden for about three days. I don't think we were very popular with the neighbours that summer Blush Grin

Have you tried cooking fish en papillotte? (And throw packages straight away afterwards.)

Or perhaps in a fish kettle in a court bouillon? You don't have to always cook entire fish in them but recipe just as an example here.

And always rinse off any plates/baking trays straightaway and put straight in to dw.
